Bayley Scholz (Kimberly) and his Real Salt Lake-Arizona teammates celebrated a national title Saturday night.
RSL-Arizona, the residency program of the Major League Soccer team, snapped a tie in the 75th minute and added an insurance goal in the 78th to double up Texas' Solar Chelsea SC 4-2 in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Under-15/16 championship game at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston.
Scholz was on the bench for the first match at Finals Week, a 3-1 win over New York's Albertson SC last Sunday, but didn't make the game-day roster for the final three games. The center back, who turned 17 on July 15, made six appearances for RSL-Arizona (22-7-6) this season, including two starts.
Defender Valdis Upmalis and midfielder Eddosa Muhammed – both UW-Green Bay recruits – got the start for Shattuck-St. Mary's in Saturday night's national final at BBVA Compass Stadium, but the Minnesota side lost to the New York Red Bulls 2-1 after extra time.
Muhammed set up Lesley Nchanji's 10th-minute opener for Shattuck (23-8-3). The Red Bulls equalized in the 30th, went ahead in the 115th minute and held on for the final 5 minutes of the second 15-minute period of extra time to secure the title. Upmalis logged 117 minutes for Shattuck, while Muhammed was subbed out at halftime in his final match before joining the Phoenix.
The Under-17/18 and Under-15/16 teams from Wisconsin's only club in the Development Academy, the newly renamed FC Wisconsin Nationals, will start their 2013-14 seasons at home Sept. 7 and 8 against the Minnesota Thunder Academy and Shattuck-St. Mary's.
The teams have 10 matches scheduled for the fall portion of the season and the final 14 in the spring. The Nationals' entry in the new Under-13/14 division will make its debut Sept. 14 at Chicago Magic PSG, with their first home matches Oct. 5 and 6 against the Chicago Fire and Indiana Fire.
