The three coaches whose teams won WIAA state girls championships this spring will be collecting more hardware.
Cedarburg's Trent Berg, Ozaukee's Eric Liebergen and Waukesha Catholic Memorial's John Burke were named the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association Coaches of the Year.
The coaches will be honored at the National Soccer Coaches Association of America High School Awards Brunch on Aug. 3 in Orlando, Fla.
In Berg's fourth season, the Bulldogs (18-3-1) beat Waukesha West 4-1 to win their first WIAA Division 1 state title. They lost their first three games of the season to Missouri teams at the St. Louis Classic, then went unbeaten in 19 matches (18-0-1) against Wisconsin teams, posting 12 shutouts and outscoring foes 69-8. Cedarburg is 64-15-4 in Berg's tenure and has advanced to the sectional semifinal or beyond in each of his seasons at the helm.
The Warriors (21-1-2) topped Racine Prairie School 3-1 for their fourth Division 3 state championship, following titles won in 2003, '05 and '06 and matching Brookfield Central for the fourth-best total in WIAA history. Liebergen has guided Ozaukee to each of those championships, tying him with Whitefish Bay's Mark Botterill (1994, 1998 to 2000) and Brookfield Central's Bryan Yenor (2002 to '05) for second in state history, and has a 213-86-31 record with the Warriors.
Burke, the winningest coach in state history with a 405-45-31 record in 19 seasons, led the Crusaders to their second consecutive Division 2 title and sixth overall – one behind Whitefish Bay's record total of seven. Catholic Memorial (23-0-1) made its eighth state finals appearance in the past 10 years and became the first unbeaten Division 2 state champion in the 17-year history of the division.
