Tosaint Ricketts (UW-Green Bay) were shocked in their opener at the CONCACAF Gold Cup on Sunday in Pasadena, Calif.

Fabrice Reuperné ripped a 25-yard half volley into the upper right corner of the goal in the 93rd minute as Martinique stunned Canada 1-0.

Ricketts played the full 90 minutes in his 22nd cap for Canada against Martinique, which isn't a FIFA member – the Caribbean island is classified as an overseas department of France and therefore not eligible for FIFA membership. However, it is allowed to play in CONCACAF competitions and advanced to the Gold Cup quarterfinals in 2002.

Next up for Canada is a matchup against two-time defending Gold Cup champion Mexico on Thursday in Seattle. (10 p.m., Fox Soccer Channel). The Mexicans lost to Panama 2-1 in Sunday's second match at the Rose Bowl, increasing the pressure on under-fire manager José Manuel "Chepo" de la Torre.

Canada closes out Group A play Sunday against Panama in Denver – the top two teams from each of the three groups advance to the knockout round, in addition to the two highest-ranked third-place finishers.

This year's Gold Cup winner will take on the 2015 tournament champion for the right to represent CONCACAF in the 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia.
