The FC Milwaukee Academy team played its final matches under that club name last week, going 1-1-1 at the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Showcase in Frisco, Texas.

FC Milwaukee – which will be re-named FC Wisconsin when it resumes play in the fall – fielded a young team for the matches, using primarily Under-15/16 players against Under-17/18 competition.

After dropping a 1-0 decision to California's Irvine Strikers in their opener Monday night, the Nationals got goals from Keoni Bailey (Oshkosh West) and Nick Moon (Waukesha West) against the Richmond Strikers only to see the Virginia side score on the last kick of the night to salvage a 2-2 draw.

FC Milwaukee closed out the season on a high note. Playing in 101-degree heat Thursday afternoon, Reid Stevenson (Sturgeon Bay) scored twice and set up Marcelle Moss (Appleton West) for the other goal as the Nationals overcame two deficits and went on to a 3-2 victory over New Hampshire's Seacoast United.

Alex Masbruch (Slinger) and Braden Andryk (Milwaukee Marquette) each had two assists on the week for FC Milwaukee.

  • A quartet of Nationals players recently verbally committed to Division I state schools for 2014: Stevenson and Moon to UW-Milwaukee, while Masbruch and Nikola Atlija (Franklin) to the University of Wisconsin. Men's recruiting list
  • Four teams that have players with Wisconsin ties won their groups at the playoffs in Frisco and earned berths for the Development Academy Finals Week, which is July 14 to 20 in Houston. In the Under-15/16 division, defender Bayley Scholz (Kimberly) and Real Salt Lake-Arizona won Group 6 to qualify for the finals. Three teams that advanced in the Under-17/18 bracket include players who will play college soccer in the state starting this fall: Group 5 champion Shattuck-Saint Mary's (Minn.), with defenders Trey Benhart and Valdis Upmalis and forward Eddosa Muhammad, all UW-Green Bay recruits; Group 7 winner De Anza Force (Calif.), with midfielder Skyler Felt (UW); and Group 8 champion St. Louis Scott Gallagher Missouri, with midfielders Brian Hail (UW) and Conner Sendobry (UW-Green Bay) and forward Nick Jones (UW).
