Wisconsin Soccer Central

Sixteen Wisconsin soccer teams will spend the weekend in Des Moines, Iowa, shooting for U.S. Youth Soccer Region II championships.

The state contingent features 13 teams that won Wisconsin State Championships – nine doing so three weeks ago and four high school-aged girls teams claiming titles last fall – along with three teams that were added to the regional field as wild cards.

A pair of Under-18 teams, the SC Waukesha Pumas boys and the North Shore United Blue girls, claimed regional berths through the Midwest Regional League. Meanwhile, the Milwaukee Bavarians' Under-14 boys team was added as a state runner-up.

Group play at regionals is Saturday through Monday, with the semifinals on Tuesday and the Region II finals on Wednesday. Regional champions advance to the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships, which are July 23 to 28 in Overland Park, Kan.

SC Waukesha leads Wisconsin clubs with four teams at regionals, while Kenosha's United FC has three. The Bavarians, North Shore United and Middleton's Rush Wisconsin each have two sides in the competition, while Appleton SC, the Madison 56ers and Ace Milwaukee have one apiece.

In the Under-18 boys division, the state champion 56ers and SC Waukesha Pumas are in the same group and play each other in a pool finale at 4 p.m. Monday. The Pumas lost to FC Green Bay Orange 5-4 in the semifinals of the Wisconsin State Championships; the Madison team then beat FC Green Bay 2-0 in the final.
