June 24, 2009: Center back Jay DeMerit (Green Bay/Bay Port) played the full 90 minutes in one of the biggest wins in U.S. national team history, a 2-0 victory over Spain in the semifinals of the Confederations Cup in Bloemfontein, South Africa. DeMerit's play was described as "superb" by Barcelona sports newspaper El Mundo Deportivo as the Americans ended Spain's 35-game unbeaten streak and 15-game winning streak to gain their first FIFA men's final at any level.
