With the opening round of the WIAA prep girls soccer playoffs in the books – a day later than expected, thanks to severe weather that pushed several matches to Friday – let's take a look at the numbers from the regional semifinals.

  • Higher-seeded teams posted a 108-12-2 record and advanced in 109 of the 122 games. Breaking it down, higher seeds were 55-6-2 in Division 1, 26-4-0 in Division 2 and 27-2-0 in Division 3.
  • Eight of the 13 lower-seeded sides to move on to Saturday's regional finals were seeded just one spot lower than their opponent: six No. 9 seeds got past No. 8 seeds, while two No. 5s defeated No. 4s.
  • The biggest upset of the round was in Division 3, where No. 12 seed Lomira blanked fifth-seeded Fond du Lac Springs 3-0 on Thursday. In Division 2, 11th-seeded Kewaskum posted a 3-1 victory over No. 6 seed Freedom on Thursday. The only team seeded lower than ninth in Division 1 to advance was No. 10 seed Madison East, which outlasted seventh-seeded Fort Atkinson 2-1 in overtime Friday.
  • A whopping 70 percent of the regional semifinals – 86 of 122 – were shutouts.
  • Twenty teams scored 10 goals or more, and all but one of those sides posted clean sheets, too. Five of those games were in the Brookfield Central sectional and four were in the Whitefish Bay sectional.
  • The weather-delayed matches mean that nine teams will have to play on consecutive days. Saturday's regional final schedule
