Waukesha Catholic Memorial freshman striker Emily Cervantes has been lighting up scoreboards this spring, scoring 31 goals through the Crusaders' first 12 matches.

This was the biggest week yet for Cervantes: She tied a program record with six goals in a 10-1 win over Oak Creek last Saturday, broke the mark with a seven-goal outing in a 10-0 rout of rival Waukesha South on Tuesday and was named the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/TopDrawerSoccer.com Girls High School Player of the Week.

"Even when she is double- or triple-teamed by opponents, Emily finds a way to create space for herself," Catholic Memorial coach John Burke said in the NSCAA news release. "She provides excellent offensive pressure on the opposing fullbacks."

The Crusaders (11-0-1), ranked first in the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association Division 2 state poll, have outscored opponents 65-5 and haven't allowed more than one goal in any game.

  • While Catholic Memorial has played a dozen games, some teams in the northern part of the state are still waiting to take the field. Three Lakes has had 11 matches postponed or canceled, and will try again to play its season opener Monday at home against Kingsford (Mich.) – the first of 10 games still on the Bluejays' schedule. Bayfield-Washburn also hasn't played yet, while Spooner and Phillips have managed to get in just one match apiece.
  • Waunakee finally opened its Northern Badger Conference season Thursday, thumping host Reedsburg 8-1 for its 49th consecutive league victory. The Warriors are 60-1-0 all-time in Northern Badger action, with the lone loss a 1-0 setback to Reedsburg on May 20, 2003.
  • Ashland's 3-2 overtime loss to host Eau Claire North last Friday in a non-conference game appears to have been the Oredockers' first regular-season defeat since at least 2008. Coming into the season, Ashland was 94-4-2 overall over the past four years, with all four of the losses coming in the postseason – in the WIAA Division 2 state semifinals in 2009 and in sectional finals each of the past three seasons. The Oredockers also lost to River Falls 2-1 last Saturday.
  • Senior Katie Bares had a hat trick in an 18-minute stretch in the opening half hour as Ozaukee – ranked first in the WSCA Division 3 poll – beat Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah 6-1 in a Central Lakeshore Conference match Tuesday night, giving Warriors coach Eric Liebergen his 200th career victory. Liebergen is 200-85-30 in 14 seasons as Ozaukee girls coach and led the Warriors to state titles in 2003, '05 and '06.
