With two openings to fill on his coaching staff, University of Wisconsin men's soccer coach John Trask ended up adding both experience and youth – and two assistants with well-respected backgrounds.

Stan Anderson (UW-Parkside), who was an assistant at Loyola (Ill.) last fall after a combined 16 seasons at UW-Milwaukee and Marquette, was named a volunteer assistant for the Badgers on Wednesday. At the same time, Ian Sarachan was announced as Trask's second assistant.

Sarachan, who turns 25 on May 10, played for Trask at Illinois-Chicago and has been an assistant for the Los Angeles Galaxy's Under-14, Under-16 and Under-18 teams. He is the son of former Chicago Fire coach and current Galaxy assistant Dave Sarachan.

Anderson replaces Ryan Hopkins, who left UW in January after one season to become an assistant at Denver, and will work with the Badgers' goalkeepers as Hopkins did last year. Sarachan succeeds three-year veteran Phil Presser, who was named the Developmental Academy Director of the Indiana Fire last month.

"Ian and Stan's background in the game speaks to the quality each will bring to their respective positions," Trask said in a news release. "Stan's background in goalkeeper training and steady leadership for our goalkeeping core will bring out the best in each keeper on the team. I have no doubt that Ian will be a huge asset for the existing team and continue to help build this program by using his network to attract top players to the University of Wisconsin."

Anderson, an NCAA Division II All-American keeper at Parkside, helped lead UWM to five consecutive NCAA tournament berths in his 10-year stint with the Panthers. He moved to crosstown rival Marquette in 2006, and was named one of the nation's top assistant coaches by College Soccer News in 2010. He also coaches with the Chicago Fire Academy.

Sarachan was a midfielder for Trask at UIC from 2006 to '09 – a newspaper report from his prep days mentioned that UW was among the schools recruiting him out of Warren (Ill.) – was a team captain, and played a key role for the Flames in their run to the Elite Eight in 2007. He's also worked as a player agent for Wasserman Media Group.

"The addition of Ian as a full-time assistant will benefit all members of the team," said Trask, who is heading into his fourth season with the Badgers. "Ian scored some of the biggest goals in our run to an Elite Eight appearance while manning the midfield during his four-year career."

UW finished 4-0-2 during the spring exhibition season, outscoring opponents 9-0 in the process. The Badgers' alumni game is scheduled for Sunday at the University Bay practice field.

  • Saturday's scheduled women's exhibition match between UW and Minnesota in Chippewa Falls was canceled.
  • Freshman Patrick Hodan (Milwaukee Marquette) scored the opening goal as Notre Dame beat the Mexican Under-20 national team 3-2 in a friendly Friday night in South Bend, Ind. Hodan converted off a rebound in the 19th minute, slotting home a shot from 12 yards out after Mexican keeper Richard Sanchez parried away a shot by Alex Priede.
