The Mequon United Under-14 girls team was less than a minute away from winning the USL Super Y-League North American Championship on Tuesday, but ended up having to settle for second.
Grace Bahr scored with 20 seconds left in regulation as the Cleveland Internationals pulled level at 1-1, then converted her spot kick as the Ohio club won 4-2 on penalty kicks in the final in Bradenton, Fla.
Mequon United won all three of its pool matches in the 12-team bracket, beating Pennsylvania's Rage SC 1-0 on Friday, New Hampshire's Seacoast United Wanderers 2-0 on Saturday and Florida's West Pines Strikers FC 2-1 on Sunday.
Courtney Wiencek had two goals and an assist in group play, Isabelle Thomsen had a goal and an assist and Molly Riebau and Greta Ricigliano also scored for Mequon United.
Monday's semifinal against Pennsylvania's Super Nova FC ended scoreless after 90 minutes and two 10-minute halves of extra time and also went to penalty kicks. Mequon United goalkeeper Kelli Ausman came up with one save and two other shots hit the post as the Wisconsin side advanced 4-3.
Wiencek scored her third goal of the week off a set piece in the 52nd minute, finishing off a corner kick by Thomsen for a 1-0 lead in the final. The slim advantage held up until the final seconds, when Bahr managed to get off a shot despite tight marking and beat a diving Ausman for the late equalizer.
The Internationals made all four of their penalties in the shootout, while Thomsen hit the crossbar in the first round for Mequon United and Wiencek fired high in the fourth round.
