WI Futsal Academy, with players from Cedarburg club North Shore United and Kenosha's United FC, is a national champion once again.
The Under-15 boys team beat Sporting Kansas City White 6-3 in the final of the U.S. Youth Futsal National Championships on Monday at the New Century (Kan.) Fieldhouse.
It's the fourth title for the team, which previously won national championships at Under-10 (2008), Under-12 (2010) and Under-13 (2011). Monday's victory also gave the team a measure of revenge, as Sporting Kansas City beat them 5-4 in last year's Under-14 final.
The Wisconsin side won all four of its matches at nationals, rolling past Sporting Kansas City Blue 6-2 and New Hampshire's NH Insurection 8-0 in pool play and tipping Missouri's Sporting Blue Valley 5-4 in the semifinals.
The team's roster for the weekend included Austin Barr, Tom Ehrsam, Sam Gomez, Ben Krolczyk, Eduardo Marin, Luka Prpa and Drew Winkoski from North Shore United and Videl Lomeli and Vitalis Takawira from United FC. The team is coached by Danny Madrigal, Hank Ehrsam and Vitalis "Digital" Takawira, the former Major League Soccer and Zimbabwean national team striker.
Two girls teams from Wisconsin also competed at nationals, with the Elm Grove SC Blues finishing second in the Under-15 division.
Coach Dariane Schneider's Blues rolled up 35 goals in going 2-1-1 in pool play, including a 9-9 tie with New Hampshire's Samba Black. Those teams met again Monday for the national title, with the New Hampshire team prevailing 8-1.
Five of the team's players - Alex Brittain, Maureen Burke, Emily Cervantes, Riley Christensen and Jordyn Rolli - are freshmen at Waukesha Catholic Memorial, whileMarissa Jurasovich is a ninth-grader at Brookfield Central.
The team considered not playing at nationals because only six players could make the trip, meaning they would have just one substitute for each match, and none of the players who played are goalkeepers.
In Under-13 play, the WI Futsal Academy side coached by Art Kramer finished 0-2-1 in pool play.
Milwaukee Wave coach Keith Tozer, the U.S. Futsal national team coach, presented a clinic for coaches and players at the tournament Friday.
