Quick kicks: Men's college outlook

Wisconsin's two entries in the NCAA Division III men's soccer tournament – Carroll and UW-Platteville – will be in action Saturday in Northfield, Minn., while a host of other state natives will take the field across the Midwest looking to move on.

Meanwhile, another state team will play for a national championship, as Northland International seeks its 10th National Christian College Athletic Association Division II title as its tournament wraps up in Kissimmee, Fla.

Here's a look at Carroll, Platteville, Northland International and other state players in tournament play:

NCAA Division III

Carroll Pioneers

Coach: Rick Mobley, 15th season (142-90-21).
Record: 12-7-1 overall, 7-1-1 Midwest Conference (second).
How they qualified: Automatic bid as Midwest Conference tournament champion. Defeated Lake Forest (Ill.) 2-0 in the final.
NSCAA ranking: National – Not ranked. North Region – Not ranked.
NCAA tournament history: 1-4-0 in four previous appearances (2007, '08, '10 and '11).
Goals for: 35 (1.75 per game). Goals against: 25 (1.25). Shutouts: Five.

Goals for: 54 (3.00 per game). Goals against: 12 (0.65). Shutouts: 10.

Other state players

No. 12 Carleton (17-1-2), which brings a 15-game unbeaten streak (13-0-2) into its home match against Carroll, has five Wisconsin natives on its roster. Sophomore forward Will Schifeling (Eau Claire Regis) has played in all but one match and has two goals and three assists, while sophomore midfielder Jordy Cammarota (Neenah) has two assists in 11 appearances. Another sophomore, Keenan Smith (Madison West) has a 0.62 gaa and two shutouts in nine appearances in goal, while freshmen Reed Cammarota (Neenah) and Tom Felton (Appleton West) each have played in three games. The Knights have 12 shutouts and have allowed just 10 goals. Carleton was the last team to beat No. 22 Gustavus Adolphus, which is unbeaten in nine (8-0-1) since a 3-0 loss to the Knights on Sept. 29. The teams tied 0-0 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament final last week. Sophomore striker Zach Brown (Eau Claire Memorial) is the Gusties' leading scorer with 14 goals and has added three assists in 19 games. Sophomore defender Chris Bergland (Hudson) and junior midfielder Casey Gilbert (Marshfield) each have played in 10 matches for Gustavus, which opens against UW-Platteville. ... Seven state natives are on the rosters of teams playing in Dubuque, Iowa, this weekend. Junior defender Erik Berkowitz (Racine St. Catherine's) is second on the team with seven goals and senior defender Malcolm Calbert (Stoughton) anchors the backline and has two goals and an assist for host and fourth-ranked Loras (19-1-1), while freshman midfielder Jorge Simon (Kimberly) has made seven appearances for the Duhawks. Loras, which has given up just eight goals and has rattled off 12 straight wins since the loss to UW-Platteville, plays host to St. Scholastica, Minn. (18-4-0) on Saturday. Sophomore midfielder Ethan Walpole (Superior) has four goals and two assists in just nine games for the Saints. Washington-St. Louis, Mo. (10-4-2) has two regulars from Wisconsin in senior defender-midfielder Brian Wright (Milwaukee Marquette) and sophomore midfielder-forward Chris Haeberle (Brookfield East), who is tied for the team lead with four goals and three assists. Junior midfielder Martin Schoen (Wauwatosa East) also has made seven appearances for the Bears, who play North Park, Ill. (12-2-5) on Saturday. ... Senior keeper Max Gutbrod (Slinger) made two saves Friday as No. 8 Dominican, Ill. (17-2-1) rallied from an early deficit to beat Webster (Mo.) 3-1 in a first-round match in River Forest, Ill. Gutbrod has a 0.48 gaa and eight shutouts for the Stars, and his backup is freshman Wesley Zank (Sun Prairie). Next up for Dominican is a second-round match against 21st-ranked DePauw, Ind. (14-1-5), which posted a 3-0 victory over No. 18 Calvin, Mich. (16-4-1) on Friday. Sophomore midfielder Victor Gonzalez (Edgerton) made two appearances this season for Calvin.

NCCAA Division II

Northland International advanced to the NCCAA Division II final for the second straight year, beating Toccoa Falls (Ga.) 3-0 in Wednesday's quarterfinals and routing Ohio Christian 8-0 in Thursday's semifinals in Kissimmee, Fla.

The Pioneers (16-5-1) will see familiar foe in Saturday's championship game: Moody Bible (Ill.). The Archers (18-1-0) beat Northland International 3-1 in last season's final, then topped them 2-1 in a non-conference match on Sept. 29 and 5-0 in the Midwest Regional final on Oct. 27 to extend their winning streak in the series to five.

Northland International, based in Dunbar, has won nine NCCAA national titles and was seeded second in the eight-team tournament despite being the only at-large team. Moody Bible, seeking its fourth championship, has outscored its two opponents at nationals 10-0.
