The UW-Parkside women's soccer team likely was one of the final teams to make the NCAA Division II tournament field.

But the Rangers have proven that they certainly belong in the tournament.

Parkside upset two nationally ranked teams on the weekend in Quincy, Ill., blanking No. 22 William Jewell 2-0 on Friday and rallying past No. 13 Quincy 2-1 on Sunday to advance to the third round.

The trio of sophomore striker Kaela Hoecherl (Kenosha Tremper), junior midfielderJasmine Espino and senior midfielder Megan Owens played key roles in the attack for the Rangers (14-4-1) on the weekend.

Hoecherl scored the equalizer against Quincy (16-3-2) in the 74th minute, running onto a long ball from junior forward Ashley Meyer and slotting a shot past Hawks goalkeeperJodi Chapie for her fifth goal in as many games. Owens then delivered the winner in the 82nd, scoring her team-best seventh goal of the season by finishing off a pass from Espino.

Quincy had just two shots on goal in the match, including Jaclyn Mastroianni's 14th-minute penalty kick that gave the home side the early lead. The Hawks play in the Great Lakes Valley Conference along with Parkside, but the teams' scheduled meeting this season was canceled due to inclement weather.

On Friday, Owens set up Hoecherl's opener in the 59th and Espino added an insurance goal in the 74th and sophomore keeper Michelle Girard made eight saves – seven in the first half – in the win over William Jewell. The victory avenged a regular-season loss, as the Cardinals (15-3-3) knocked off the Rangers by the same score in a GLVC match on Sept. 16.

Parkside advances to play a familiar foe: Third-ranked Grand Valley State, Mich. (19-1-2). The Rangers have played the Lakers in each of their previous five NCAA tournament appearances, and they will meet again in a regional final at 4 p.m. Friday in Allendale, Mich.

  • Senior forward Ashley Botts (Beloit) set up the final goal as Grand Valley State scored three second-half goals to rally past Rockhurst (Mo.) 3-1 in a second-round match Sunday in Allendale, extending its home unbeaten streak to 50. Botts leads the Lakers with 15 goals.
  • Senior goalkeeper Amy Kunowski (Greendale) made nine saves as Bellarmine, Ky. (14-4-2) lost to Rockhurst 3-0 in a first-round match Friday in Allendale. Kunowski finished first in program history in career goals-against average, save percentage and shutouts and third in saves.
  • Sophomore midfielder Sydney Temple (Madison La Follette) and senior defenderHaley Petterson (Evansville) came off the bench as No. 17 Minnesota State-Mankato got an 82nd-minute goal to tip visiting Central Oklahoma 1-0 in a second-round match Sunday. The Mavericks (17-1-3), unbeaten in their past 18 games (17-0-2), move on to face No. 12 Central Missouri (15-2-4) in the third round on Friday afternoon in Allendale.

NCAA Division I

Junior Lisa Philbin and senior Ally Miller (Mequon Homestead) scored in the first half, sophomore Mary Luba (Shorewood) added a second-half goal and freshman Amanda Engel made three saves in her seventh shutout as No. 12 Marquette breezed past Illinois State 3-0 in a first-round match Friday night at Valley Fields.

The Golden Eagles (17-2-2) extended their unbeaten streak to 15 games (14-0-1) and tied a program record with their 16th clean sheet of the year. They advance to play Princeton (14-3-1) in a second-round game Thursday in Provo, Utah.

Philbin tapped in a cross from senior Rachael Sloan at the near post for her third goal of the season in the fourth minute, and Miller doubled the advantage with her sixth of the year when Redbirds keeper Aryn Newsom couldn't hold her 25-yard strike in the 27th. Marquette's final goal came off a set piece, as junior Emily Jacobson (Shorewood) sent in a free kick from 40 yards out that Luba tracked and touched past Newsom first-time for her fourth goal in the 69th.

Engel's best save came in the 55th, when she got to the upper corner to swat a shot by Illinois State standout Rachel Tejada over the crossbar. It was the first time this season the Redbirds (13-5-2) failed to score in a match and the second straight year their season ended in Milwaukee – they lost to UW-Milwaukee 3-1 in a first-round NCAA match in 2011.

  • Senior Helen Steinhauser converted a penalty kick in the 28th minute as UW-Milwaukee took the lead against Notre Dame, but the Fighting Irish (14-5-2) stormed back for a 3-1 victory Friday night in South Bend, Ind. The Panthers (8-9-1) earned the penalty thanks to a great through ball from sophomore Kelsey Holbert, who played classmate Kelly Lewers into the box, where she was pushed down from behind. Steinhauser finished for her fourth goal of the season and a surprising advantage. Notre Dame pulled level with the help of a Milwaukee native, as freshman defender Brittany Von Rueden (Milwaukee DSHA) served in a corner kick that Katie Naughton headed past Panthers senior keeper Jamie Forbes from 6 yards out in the 44th. Lauren Bohaboy finished past Forbes from 8 yards after a deflection in the 53rd to put the Irish ahead and Crystal Thomas sealed the outcome by chipping Forbes for her ninth goal with just 40 seconds left. UWM junior Krissy Dorre answered with a blast on the other end, forcing Notre Dame keeper Elyse Hight to make her lone save of the night with 12 seconds to go. Forbes finished with six saves in her final college match as the Irish compiled an 18-3 advantage in shots.
  • Freshman Taylor Smith scored her eighth goal of the season on a header in the 15th minute as No. 6 UCLA blanked the University of Wisconsin 1-0 on Saturday in Los Angeles. "UCLA is a very good team – very well organized and, on this day, I thought the effort was there from our group and we just didn't get the result," said Badgers coach Paula Wilkins, whose team also lost to the host Bruins 2-0 back on Aug. 31. Caprice Dydasco served in a cross from the left side and Smith nodded it past UW junior keeper Genevieve Richard for what proved to be the lone goal. UCLA (16-2-2) outshot the Badgers 18-2 and forced Richard into four saves in her sixth career start. UW had a late chance, as senior defender Lindsey Johnson(Mequon Homestead) got off a shot during a scramble in the box in the 83rd, but Bruins defender Lucretia Lee kept the shot from reaching the net. "Today we started five freshmen and, to get an NCAA game against a team that really hadn't lost too many games this season, is great experience moving forward," Wilkins said.
  • UCLA will next face Kentucky (14-6-1), which got past Tennessee-Martin 1-0 in overtime Friday. Junior Sarah Tompkins (Franklin) was the backup goalkeeper for Tennessee-Martin (13-6-3).
  • No. 11 Baylor and coach Marci Jobson (UW) set a program record for wins and pushed its unbeaten streak to 19 (15-0-4) with a 3-1 victory over Arizona State on Friday night in Tempe, Ariz. The Bears (18-1-4), whose leading scorer is senior forward Dana Larsen (Mequon Homestead), will next face No. 14 Georgetown on Friday in Chapel Hill, N.C.
  • It was a night of highs and lows for Miami (Fla.) freshman midfielder Ally Andreini(Oshkosh West) on Saturday against Central Florida. Andreini scored her second career goal with a header in the 20th minute, but hit the crossbar in the shootout as Central Florida (17-4-2) ousted the Hurricanes (9-7-4) 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Orlando, Fla.
  • Junior defender Sarah Thune (Walworth Big Foot-Williams Bay) and Missouri also had their season end on penalty kicks, falling 3-0 after a 1-1 tie with Illinois on Saturday in Columbia, Mo. Thune didn't see action in the match.

NCAA Division III

Anna Seabolt and Leah DeMoss each scored twice as host and No. 11 Wheaton (Ill.) scored five times in the opening half hour and powered past UW-Whitewater 7-0 in a second-round match Saturday.

It was the second straight season the Thunder ended the Warhawks' season – last year, Wheaton won 4-1 in the third round – and it marked just the fourth time in program history that Whitewater has given up seven goals in a game. The Warhawks allowed eight goals to UW-Stevens Point on Oct. 30, 1992, and again on Sept. 29, 2001.

Ally Witt assisted DeMoss' second goal and scored the final two goals for the Thunder (19-3-2), who lost in the national championship game last season. The Warhawks finished 16-5-1 in their first season under coach Ryan Quamme, setting a program record for victories.

  • Whitewater scored on its first shot, as senior midfielder Alyssa Chamberlain (De Pere) capitalized off a corner kick in the sixth minute, and went on to a 4-0 win over Wittenberg (Ohio) in a first-round match Friday in Wheaton. Senior defender Kelsey Finn (Glendale Nicolet) made it 2-0 in the 14th with her fourth goal of the season on a free kick from the top of the box and sophomore midfielder Sarah Sedlar (Racine Case) added a third off an assist from Chamberlain in the 23rd. Sophomore midfielder Natalie Lechner (Waukesha Catholic Memorial) finished off the convincing victory with a great individual effort in the 53rd, getting the ball at midfield, working past two defenders and finishing to the lower left corner for her third goal of the season. Sophomore keeper Jordan Myers made five saves in her eighth shutout as the Warhawks extended their unbeaten streak to 10 (9-0-1).
  • Senior forward Hillary Wilson (Waunakee) served in a corner kick that Katie Truesdale headed in for what proved to be the winning goal in the 66th minute, and sophomore Hannah Wilson (Waunakee) made one save for the shutout as host and No. 19 Loras blanked St. Scholastica (Minn.) 2-0 in a first-round match Friday in Dubuque, Iowa. Hillary Wilson scored her seventh goal of the season on a free kick from just outside the box in the 18th minute as the Duhawks (19-4-0) extended their winning streak to 12 by beating Calvin (Mich.) 4-2 on Saturday and advanced to a third-round matchup against 16th-ranked Emory (Ga.) in Pittsburgh next Saturday.
  • No. 22 Aurora and junior defender Jenee Lange (Green Bay Notre Dame) outshot Calvin (Mich.) 17-8 on Friday, but couldn't find the back of the net and lost 1-0 on a goal 19 seconds into overtime.
  • Abby Starker (Whitefish Bay) appeared in both matches as host and third-ranked Washington-St. Louis (Mo.) advanced to the Sweet 16 by beating Transylvania (Ky.) 3-0 Saturday and No. 16 Thomas More (Ky.) 3-2 in overtime Sunday. Fellow freshman Liz Collins (Brookfield Academy) played in the first-round match for the Bears (18-1-1), who are unbeaten in 15 (14-0-1) heading into Friday's third-round home game against No. 14 Concordia-Moorhead (Minn.).
  • Lake Forest (Ill.) gave up goals in the 59th and 82nd minutes and lost to Concordia-Moorhead 2-1 in the first round Saturday in Waverly, Iowa. Freshman strikers Michelle Greeneway (Sheboygan North) and Holly Lesperance (Waukesha South), the Foresters' leading scorers, were held off the scoresheet. Senior midfielder Lindsey Boyke (Verona) came off the bench as host Wartburg lost to Cal Lutheran 2-1 in another first-round match.

NAIA

Viterbo (15-2-1), which swept the Midwest Collegiate Conference regular-season and tournament titles, is one of 32 teams qualified for the NAIA national tournament. First-round matches are Saturday, with the bracket scheduled to be released Monday.
