Quick kicks: Women's outlook

And then there were three.

The Marquette (Division I) and UW-Parkside (Division II) women's teams continue play in their respective NCAA tournaments this weekend, while Viterbo makes its debut in the NAIA national tournament.

Here's a look at the three state teams still playing, along with other Wisconsin players at out-of-state schools.

 

NCAA Division I

Marquette Golden Eagles

Marquette

Coach: Markus Roeders, 17th season (253-91-35).
Record: 17-2-2 overall, 9-0-1 Big East Conference American Division (first).
How they got here: Earned automatic bid as Big East tournament champion, beating Georgetown 1-0 in the final. Defeated Illinois State 3-0 in the first round.
NSCAA ranking: National – 12th. Northeast Region – First.
NCAA tournament history: 8-8-3 in 11 appearances (1999, 2000, '01, '02, '05, '06, '08, '09, '10, '11 and '12).
Goals for: 56 (2.67 per game). Goals against: 12 (0.57). Shutouts: 16.
Leading scorers: M-F Maegan Kelly, jr. (8 goals-12 assists); M-F Taylor Madigan, jr. (8-4); M-F Kate Reigle, jr. (5-5); F Rachael Sloan, sr. (5-3); D-M Ally Miller, sr. (6-1); M Mary Luba, so. From the touchline: Unbeaten in 15 matches (14-0-1) since only losses, 4-0 to North Carolina on Sept. 7 and 5-2 to Duke on Sept. 9, and have outscored opponents 44-3 in that span. ... Lead nation in shutouts and have allowed goals in just five games. ... Ranked seventh in the country in scoring and 10th in goals-against average. ... Engel, who made her college debut in the North Carolina match, ranks second in the nation in goals-against average. ... Defeated Toledo 1-0 in overtime in first-round of NCAA tournament last season before falling to Penn State 4-1. ... Second-round opponent Princeton ranks seventh in the nation in scoring with an average of 2.83 goals per game.
On tap: Second round – vs. Princeton (14-3-1), 4 p.m. Thursday in Provo, Utah. Third round – Winner vs. No. 2 Brigham Young (19-1-1) or Auburn (13-10-1), 6 p.m. Saturday.

Other state player

No. 11 Baylor (18-1-4), coached by Marci Jobson (UW), faces No. 14 Georgetown (16-3-3) in a second-round match Friday in Chapel Hill, N.C. Senior forward Dana Larsen(Mequon Homestead) has team highs of 10 goals and nine assists for the Bears, who would play No. 13 North Carolina or Illinois in the third round Sunday.

NCAA Division II

UW-Parkside Rangers

Coach: Troy Fabiano, 15th season (190-67-22).
Record: 14-4-1 overall, 11-3-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference (fourth).
How they got here: Earned one of 28 at-large berths in the 48-team field. Defeated No. 22 William Jewell (Mo.) 2-0 in the first round and No. 13 Quincy (Ill.) 2-1 in the second round.
NSCAA ranking: National – Not ranked. Midwest Region – Seventh.
NCAA tournament history: 6-5-1 in six appearances (2003, '04, '08, '10, '11 and '12).
Goals for: 36 (1.89 per game). Goals against: 16 (0.84). Shutouts: Nine.

Third-round matchup against No. 3 Grand Valley State (Mich.) will continue an odd streak: Parkside has played the Lakers in each of its NCAA tournament appearances. ... Last year, the Rangers defeated Quincy 2-1 in overtime in the first round before being eliminated by Grand Valley State 3-1. ... All five of Hoecherl's goals have come in the past five matches.
On tap: Third round – at No. 3 Grand Valley State (19-1-2), 4 p.m. Friday in Allendale, Mich. Quarterfinals – Winner vs. No. 17 Minnesota State-Mankato (17-1-3) or No. 12 Central Missouri (16-2-4), noon Sunday in Allendale, Mich.

Other state players

The Lakers' leading scorer is senior forward Ashley Botts (Beloit), a two-time, first-team All-American who has 15 goals and five assists. ... The Grand Valley State-Parkside winner will play No. 12 Central Missouri or No. 17 Minnesota State-Mankato, which has four Wisconsin natives on its roster. Sophomore midfielder Sydney Temple (Madison La Follette) has three goals and four assists and senior defender Haley Petterson(Evansville) has a goal and three assists as regulars for the Mavericks, who are unbeaten in 19 games (16-0-3). Senior midfielder Emma Grumke (Waunakee) has made three appearances for Mankato, while freshman striker Haley Gaines(Waunakee) also is on the team.

NCAA Division III

State players

Senior forward Hillary Wilson (Waunakee) is one of the leading scorers for No. 19 Loras, Iowa (19-4-0) with seven goals and six assists, while her sophomore sisterHannah Wilson (Waunakee) has a 0.94 goals-against average as the Duhawks' starting goalkeeper. Junior defender Kinsey Campbell (Greendale) and sophomore midfielder Abby Maier (Waunakee) also are regulars in the starting XI for Loras, which has won 12 in a row heading into Saturday's third-round match against No. 16 Emory, Ga. (13-1-6) in Pittsburgh. No. 25 Wheaton, Mass. (18-1-6) takes on host and No. 17 Carnegie Mellon (13-1-4) in the other game, with the winners to meet Sunday for a berth in the national semifinals. ... Third-ranked Washington-St. Louis (18-1-1), which freshmen Liz Collins (Brookfield Academy) and Abby Starker (Whitefish Bay), play host to Concordia-Moorhead, Minn. (17-3-2) on Friday. The winner advances to play No. 11 Wheaton, Ill. (19-3-2) or second-ranked Hardin-Simmons, Texas (18-0-2) in Saturday's national quarterfinal.

NAIA

From the touchline: Machometa ranks second in the nation in goals and Wisen is third in assists. ... Machometa's goal total is a program record for a season, while Wisen set school records for assists in a season and a career. ... Losses were to Indiana Institute of Technology 3-2 on Sept. 2 and UW-Platteville 3-1 on Oct. 24. ... Scored three goals or more 11 times. ... Guth is listed as a midfielder on the roster, but took over in goal due to injuries to the V-Hawks' two other keepers – she did play some in goal during her prep career. ... First-round foe Olivet Nazarene had a nine-game winning streak snapped with a 1-0 loss to Trinity Christian in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament semifinals. The Tigers shut out every opponent in that streak and have outscored opponents 61-7 overall.
