This weekend marked the end of the line for Wisconsin's college women's soccer teams, as Marquette (Division I) and UW-Parkside (Division II) were eliminated from their respective NCAA tournaments and Viterbo was knocked out of the NAIA tournament.

But two state players on out-of-state teams will play on. Here's a recap of the action involving Wisconsin teams and players:

NCAA Division I

Freshman goalkeeper Amanda Engel made nine saves as Marquette posted its 17th shutout of the season Saturday night.

But it wasn't enough to keep the Golden Eagles' season alive.

Host and second-ranked Brigham Young topped No. 12 Marquette 6-5 on penalty kicks following a 0-0 tie in a third-round match in Provo, Utah. The Cougars (20-1-2) will take a 20-game unbeaten streak (18-0-2) into a matchup at No. 13 North Carolina in a national quarterfinal Friday.

"I want to say congratulations to BYU. They are a wonderful team," said Golden Eagles coach Markus Roeders, whose team finished 18-2-3 and was unbeaten in its final 17 games (15-0-2). "They have so many great players and I told them congrats. Tonight was an awesome game to play by both teams. Unfortunately we didn't advance, but I can't say enough about our great play. ... It was a great game to be a part of and I am very proud of our team."

The Cougars had a 24-14 advantage in shots, including 4-1 over the two 10-minute overtimes, but Engel and BYU keeper Erica Owens (seven saves) were up to the task – and it took eight rounds of penalties to determine a winner.

Carlee Payne-Holmoe missed in the first round for BYU and Owens stopped Marquette's Rachael Sloan in the third round to leave the teams tied again. Both sides also missed in the fourth round, then traded conversions until Megan Jaskowiak's drive went over the crossbar. Kayla Varner then slotted her slot past Engel as the Cougars moved on.

  • On Thursday, the Golden Eagles fell behind for the first time since September, but stormed back to beat Princeton 3-1 in a second-round game in Provo. Lauren Lazobeat Engel on a shot from just outside the box in the 11th minute to give the Tigers (14-4-1) the surprising lead – it was just the seventh goal allowed by the freshman. Sophomore Mady Vicker (Whitefish Bay) pulled Marquette level with her fourth of the season 47 seconds before halftime off a feed from junior Cara Jacobson (Shorewood), and Taylor Madigan (Waunakee) put the Golden Eagles in front in the 54th when she finished off a corner kick by fellow junior Maegan Kelly at the back post for her team-best ninth of the year. Senior Ally Miller (Mequon Homestead) scored off Jacobson's corner in the 83rd to seal Marquette's third Sweet 16 appearance and second in three years.
  • Freshman defender Brittany Von Rueden (Milwaukee DSHA) had assists in each match as Notre Dame (16-5-2) upset No. 10 Wake Forest 2-1 on Friday and eighth-ranked Florida 2-0 on Sunday in Gainesville, Fla. Von Rueden helped set up Cari Roccaro's equalizer in the 59th minute against Wake, then served in a corner kick that Rebecca Twining finished in the 20th minute to put the Fighting Irish in front of the Gators. Von Rueden has seven assists on the season, including one in each of Notre Dame's three NCAA wins. The Irish will return to Florida next Friday to face No. 7 Florida State (19-3-0) in a national quarterfinal in Tallahassee.
  • Senior striker Dana Larsen (Mequon Homestead) scored in the 93rd minute to  lift No. 11 Baylor over 14th-ranked Georgetown 2-1 in overtime in a second-round match Friday in Chapel Hill, N.C. But in their first appearance in the Sweet 16, the Bears (19-1-5) were ousted 4-2 on penalty kicks following a 1-1 draw with host and No. 13 North Carolina on Sunday. Larsen took a cross from Larissa Campos and finished for her 11th goal of the season against the Hoyas, moving into a tie for fourth place in program history with 29 goals. "Dana has given so much over the course of her four-year career," said Baylor coach Marci Jobson, a former University of Wisconsin athlete. "She has been so solid and tonight she just found a way to score again."

NCAA Division II

Erin Hilbert headed in a corner kick in the 20th minute and senior Ashley Botts (Beloit) finished from the spot 13 minutes later as host and No. 3 Grand Valley State eliminated UW-Parkside 2-0 in a third-round match Friday in Allendale, Mich.

Sophomore keeper Michelle Girard made seven saves for the Rangers (14-5-1), who had posted eight shutouts in an 11-game winning streak. Counterpart Chelsea Parise stopped all four of Parkside's shots on goal for her 15th clean sheet.

The Rangers have played Grand Valley State in all six of its NCAA appearances, including each of the past three years – the Lakers also ousted Parkside in the third round in 2010 and in the second round last season.

  • Botts opened the scoring with her team-best 17th goal and converted her penalty kick – just barely – as Grand Valley State (20-1-3) outlasted No. 17 Minnesota State-Mankato 5-4 on penalties following a 2-2 draw in Sunday's national quarterfinal in Allendale. It's the fourth consecutive national semifinal berth for the Lakers, who will play California-San Diego (16-2-4) on Nov. 29 in Evans Park, Ga. Grand Valley State led 2-0, but the Mavericks (17-1-5) scored in the 84th and 86th minutes to force overtime and for a moment it appeared they would be off to Georgia. Mankato led the shootout 3-2 when Botts stepped to the spot for the Lakers' shot in the fifth and final round, needing to make the kick to keep her side alive. It looked like keeper Molly McGough had stopped Botts' shot, but the ball somehow got past. Junior midfielder Sydney Temple (Madison La Follette) and senior defender Haley Petterson (Evansville) came off the bench for the Mavericks, who were unbeaten in their final 21 matches (16-0-5). Grand Valley State is unbeaten in its past 52 home games (49-0-3), the second-longest streak in NCAA Division II history.
  • Temple and Petterson also saw action Friday as Mankato came out on the winning side of a shootout, prevailing 5-4 after a 1-1 draw with No. 12 Central Missouri to earn its first quarterfinal berth. The Mavericks became the first team in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference history to reach the final eight.

NCAA Division III

Freshman Abby Starker (Whitefish Bay) set up Olivia Lillegraven's 66th-minute goal as Washington-St. Louis cut its deficit in half, but No. 11 Wheaton (Ill.) added another goal to finish off a 3-1 upset of the host and third-ranked Bears in a national quarterfinal Saturday.

It's the second straight year the Thunder (21-3-2) beat Washington to earn a berth in the semifinals, and the loss ended a 16-game unbeaten streak for the Bears – their only other defeat was 4-0 to Wheaton back on Sept. 15.

Freshman Liz Collins (Brookfield Academy) joined Starker in coming off the bench for Washington (19-2-1). Starker also saw action Friday as the Bears rallied past No. 14 Concordia-Moorhead (Minn.) 2-1 to set a program record for wins.

  • Emily Feldman scored twice in 91 seconds late in the first half and No. 16 Emory, Ga. (14-1-6) held off 19th-ranked Loras (Iowa) 2-1 in a third-round match Saturday in Pittsburgh. Senior forward Hillary Wilson (Waunakee), junior defender Kinsey Campbell (Greendale), sophomore midfielder Abby Maier (Waunakee) and sophomore keeper Hannah Wilson (Waunakee) all started for the Duhawks (19-5-0), who pulled one goal back in the 75th but still saw their 12-game winning streak and season come to an end. Hannah Wilson made three saves in 74 minutes for Loras, which was outshot 12-4. Emory outlasted host Carnegie Mellon 11-10 in a 13-round shootout in the quarterfinals Sunday.

NAIA

Freshman forward Courtney Morgan (Appleton North) scored in the 54th minute to pull Viterbo even with host and No. 12 Olivet Nazarene, but the host Tigers regained the lead 15 minutes later and saw out a 2-1 victory in a first-round match Saturday in Bourbonnais, Ill.

Morgan finished off a feed from senior midfielder Lauren Neet (Stevens Point) for her 11th goal of the season – it was just the second goal conceded by Olivet in its past 11 games and only the eighth in 20 matches overall. Emma Reutter, though, scored in the 69th for the Tigers (17-3-0), who outshot the V-Hawks 23-4 and had 11 of the game's 12 corner kicks.

Sophomore goalkeeper McKenzie Guth (Onalaska) made nine saves for Viterbo in its tournament debut. The Olivet defense clamped down on high-scoring V-Hawks strikerMolly Machometa, limiting the freshman to just one shot.
