Just a few days into the prep girls soccer season, and there's already been a bit of an upset.

Defending WIAA Division 1 state champion Appleton North lost its season opener, falling to visiting Cedarburg 2-1 on Thursday night.

Junior midfielder Josee Stiever, an all-state pick last spring, scored the game-winner in the 75th minute after Anny West equalized for the Bulldogs in the 30th.

The Lightning, who took the lead through Meg Riebau's 20th-minute goal, are ranked first in the state and 29th nationally in the ESPNHS Powerade Fab 50. Milwaukee DSHA is ranked second in Wisconsin and 33rd in the country by ESPNHS, while Grafton is third in the state.

The first Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association polls of the season are scheduled to be released next Friday.

  • Vince Padilla stepped down after nine seasons as Lodi girls coach last week, citing health concerns. Padilla, who also was the school's boys coach from 2006 to '10, led the Blue Devils to a 10-11 overall record and a 6-2-0 mark in Capitol Conference play last spring. Grant Lembcke and Joe Birkholz are serving as co-coaches for Lodi, which opened the season with wins over Evansville (2-1) on Tuesday and Beaver Dam (4-0) on Thursday.
  • T.J. DiPrizio (Fort Atkinson/Marian) is once again coaching at McFarland, this time in the girls program. DiPrizio, who led the Spartans boys to a 28-19-1 mark in 2008 and '09, took over the girls program after Gaelan Fraboni (McFarland/Madison College) resigned after one season. Fraboni continues to be the McFarland boys coach.
