The crowd at UW-Whitewater's Fiskum Field was treated to plenty of scoring in Saturday's 21st annual Masonic Soccer All-Star Games.

UW-Milwaukee recruit Maria Stephans (Hartford) had a goal and an assist as the Blue team scored three times in the first half en route to a 4-1 victory over the Gold side in the girls match for recent high school graduates.

The boys game was scoreless for the first 50 minutes, but still ended up featuring a whopping eight goals. UW-Milwaukee recruit Aaron Horvat (Waukesha Catholic Memorial) and Drake recruit Jimmy Grunert (Muskego) had two goals apiece as the Gold team scored six times in the final 20 minutes to post a 6-2 victory over the Blue.

The festivities, run in conjunction with the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association, also included a camp for underprivileged youth players, training sessions for the All-Stars with guest coaches Bob Gansler and Jimmy Banks, a presentation by guest speaker Aleks Nikolic and a recognition banquet.

Here's a recap of Saturday's games at Fiskum Field, which also will play host to the event in 2013 and '14.

Stephans, who wasn't on the initial rosters for the match, opened the scoring in the 18th minute and set up a goal by Jennifer Zima (Milwaukee Pius) in the 30th to set the tone for the Blue team and was named the game's MVP.

The side coached by Waunakee's Jesus Torres and Catholic Memorial's John Burke extended its lead to 3-1 in the 37th when Liz Collins (Brookfield Academy) finished off a pass from Katie Baker (Appleton North).

Elena Beckman (Whitefish Bay) pulled one back for the Gold team with just 45 seconds left in the opening 45 minutes, but Erin Diefenthaler (New Holstein) sealed the victory for the Blue with her goal in the 81st.

Goalkeeper Alissa Viste (Grafton) and Ana Bayerlein (Brookfield Academy) split time in goal for the Blue team and each made three saves.

Kassie Franke (West Bend East) made five saves in the first half before Alex Larson-Osborne (Beloit) took over at halftime for the Gold side, coached by Sugar River's John Ziperski and Fond du Lac's Greg Winkler.

By all accounts, Blue goalkeeper Max Zimmerman (Middleton) was the star of the first half.

"He was really, really good," said Dan Stone, who coached the Gold team along with Mark Harris. "He was saving everything."

"He was brilliant in the first half," added Eau Claire Memorial coach David Kite, who guided the Blue team with his Old Abes assistant Eric Wirth. "He was brilliant in the second half, too."

With Zimmerman holding back the Gold, the Blue took the lead in the 50th minute when Antonio Gonzalez (East Troy) set up Jeremy Hish (Sauk Prairie) for the opener. Just four minutes later it was 2-0 Blue when Danny Leal (Rice Lake) scored off a pass from Kade Hanson (Verona).

But Horvat – who was named the game's MVP – scored twice in a 3-minute span to tie it with 15 minutes left, midfielder Nico Bartolomeo (Pewaukee) put the Gold ahead in the 81st, defender Grunert pushed up and added two more goals and midfielder Pat McNulty (Waukesha Catholic Memorial) finished off the incredible late surge.

"The (Gold) team had too much firepower," Kite wrote in an email.

Bradley recruit Logan Ketterer (Racine Prairie School) played the first half in goal for the Gold, while Jonathan Stahr (Milwaukee Thomas More) was between the posts in the second half.
