Milwaukee DSHA returned to the Elite Soccer Report Top 50 prep girls soccer rankings this week – the Dashers checked in at No. 50 – and likely could make a big jump up with a few wins this weekend.

DSHA (4-2-1) opens play at the seventh annual Tournament of Champions in Burlington, Iowa, on Friday afternoon against Normal (Ill.), then will play either third-ranked Ankeny (Iowa) or No. 12 Plainfield North (Ill.) on Saturday morning in the semifinals or consolation semifinal in Bracket A competition.

Waunakee (2-0-0) also is in the top bracket at the 27-team tournament and faces St. Louis Visitation Academy in its opener Friday. The Warriors, whose junior varsity team also will be at the tourney playing three varsity sides, could take on No. 18 St. Charles North (Ill.) on Saturday morning.

The other state teams at the tournament are Middleton and Schofield D.C. Everest, which will play in Bracket B. Full brackets and schedules are available on the Tournament of Champions website.

  • UPDATE: The 19th annual Laura Moynihan Tournament will go on this weekend, but the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that the event hosted by Waukesha Catholic Memorial was forced into a late format change because the grass fields at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee have been closed for the weekend. Kenosha Tremper, Pewaukee, Grafton, Muskego, Oak Creek, Fond du Lac and Whitefish Bay join the host Crusaders (7-0-0), who have outscored opponents 37-3 this season and are ranked sixth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Region III poll. All eight teams will play on the turf field at Uihlein's Time Warner Cable Stadium on Friday, then matches are scheduled at Uihlein, Whitefish Bay, Kenosha Tremper and Muskego at 10 a.m. Saturday.
  • Germantown (2-1-2) is the other state team in the NSCAA Region III rankings, checking in at No. 10.
  • The New Holstein and Kiel girls teams are teaming up to raise money for scholarship funds honoring three players from Eastern Wisconsin Conference rival Campbellsport who died in a car accident last year, the Sheboygan Press reported. Caitlin Scannell, Katie Berg and Sabrina Stahl were killed in the accident on Feb. 4, 2012. An admission donation of $3 from the April 29 match in New Holstein will go to the fund, in addition to a portion of the concession stand sales, and another fundraiser is planned for the teams' match May 28 in Kiel. • The Mississippi Valley Conference is the latest league to cut its girls soccer schedule in half for 2013 due to the inclement weather that led to the vast majority of matches during the first three weeks of the season being postponed or canceled.
