One Marquette player finishing her career and another just getting started were honored by Soccer America.

Golden Eagles senior defender-midfielder Ally Miller (Mequon Homestead) was named to the second team of the Soccer America MVPs, while goalkeeper Amanda Engel was a first-team selection on the publication's All-Freshman Team.

Miller anchored a backline that allowed just 13 goals and posted 17 clean sheets in 23 matches, and also added seven goals – four more than she totaled over her first three seasons – and an assist for Marquette (18-2-3). The Soccer America MVPs are awarded to players who had the biggest impact on their team's success, regardless of position.

Engel took over in goal midway through the season and finished the year with 0.42 goals-against average, a 14-0-2 record and eight shutouts. She also teamed with sophomore Sofie Schunk for five combined clean sheets.

NSCAA Scholar Awards

Grand Valley State (Mich.) senior forward Ashley Botts (Beloit) was lauded as the National Soccer Coaches Association of America women's Scholar All-America College Division Player of the Year.

Botts, who has a 3.52 grade-point average in biomedical sciences, had 18 goals and five assists for the Lakers (20-2-3) and was named an NSCAA Division II first-team All-American for the third consecutive season.

  • The Scholar All-America North/Central Region teams were loaded with Wisconsin players, as 16 players with state ties joined Botts on the College Division team and eight more were honored on the University Division side. Baylor senior forward Dana Larsen (Mequon Homestead), who has a 4.00 grade-point average in biochemistry, was named the South Region first team. Larsen and Miller also were named to the first team of the University Division Scholar All-American team, while Botts was a first-team selection on the College Division team. (Previously reported)
