Quick kicks: WIAA Division 1 preview

The 31st annual WIAA boys soccer state tournament kicks off Thursday with the Division 1 quarterfinals at Time Warner Cable Field at Milwaukee's Uihlein Soccer Park.

If you can't make it to Milwaukee, Fox Sports Wisconsin will provide a live stream of the matches online. Here's a look at the eight sides hoping to raise the gold ball after the Division 1 state final Saturday afternoon.

Oregon Panthers

State tournament history: Fifth appearance, first since winning Division 2 title in 1998.
From the touchline: Ranked third in Wisconsin by Elite Soccer Report. ... Lone loss was to fellow state quarterfinalist Kettle Moraine 1-0 in overtime on Aug. 23. Unbeaten in 18 matches (14-0-4) since then. ... Allowed more than one goal in only one match, a 2-2 draw with Division 2 state semifinalist Mount Horeb on Oct. 2. ... Have outscored opponents 11-0 in four playoff matches, a scoreless stretch of 350 minutes. ... Eliminated fifth-ranked Madison West 4-3 on penalty kicks following a 0-0 tie in a sectional semifinal. ... Senior captain Scott Odorico leads a balanced attack with 10 goals and six assists. His position shifts depending on the situation, as he's played forward, attacking midfielder, holding midfielder and center back. ... Senior midfielder Andrew Jend has five goals, while senior defender Colin McReavy and sophomore midfielder Ryan Machonga have four apiece. Junior forward Shaw Storey lead the team with seven assists. ... Sophomore goalkeeper Dan Dombrowski has allowed just nine goals, and made two saves in the shootout against West.

Kenosha Bradford Red Devils

Coach: Jeff Reget, first season (20-4-1).
Record: 20-4-1 (6-1-0 Southeast Conference, second). Last 10 games: 8-0-2.
Averages: Goals for – 3.16. Goals against – 1.04. Shutouts: 13.
Final WSCA ranking: Not ranked.
State tournament history: Third appearance, following berths in 1982 and 2010.
From the touchline: Won two of three regular-season matches against fellow state qualifiers, beating Brookfield East 2-1 and Kettle Moraine 3-2 and losing to Eau Claire Memorial 4-2. ... Lost to Kenosha Tremper 2-1 on Oct. 2, but avenged that loss with a 2-0 victory in last Saturday's sectional final. ... Posted shutouts in all three postseason games. ... The duo of junior striker Johnny Rimkus and senior midfielder Zach Reget make the attack go – Rimkus has 26 goals and 17 assists and Reget has 22 goals and 21 assists. ... Junior midfielder Gerado Rodriguez (8-6), senior midfielder Dan Bigley (5-5) and sophomore forward Tunji Akindes (4-5) also are threats going forward. ... Senior keeper Austin Schroeder has posted 13 clean sheets.

Neenah Rockets

Coach: Harry Kelderman, 32nd season (563-128-49).
Record: 18-4-1 (8-1-0 Fox Valley Association, first). Last 10 games: 8-1-1.
Averages: Goals for – 5.17. Goals against – 1.26. Shutouts: Five.
Final WSCA ranking: Honorable mention.
State tournament history: Record-tying 16th appearance, second in a row and fifth in seven years. Lost to Kettle Moraine 3-0 in state semifinals last year. Won state titles in 1985, '86 and 2007; runner-up in 1983 and '91.
From the touchline: Have gone 17-1-1 in past 19 matches after losing three of first four games. ... Outscored four playoff foes by a 31-2 margin. ... Two losses came to state qualifiers, falling to Division 1 quarterfinalist Kimberly 6-1 on Aug. 21 and to Division 2 semifinalist Appleton Xavier 3-1 on Sept. 29. Also topped Brookfield East 3-1 and drew 1-1 with Kettle Moraine. ... Junior midfielder Adam Pohlman leads the high-powered attack with 25 goals and 17 assists, while senior defender Taylor Hoffman (18-3), junior midfielder Trevor Brost (14-5) and senior defender Tylor Rosera (13-5) all have scored more than 10 goals. ... Sophomore defender David Bacon and sophomore midfielder Elliot Kasten each have seven assists.

Kettle Moraine Lasers

Coach: Greg Prospero.
Record: 14-5-4 (5-2-1 Classic 8 Conference, third). Last 10 games: 5-2-3.
Averages: Goals for – 2.74. Goals against – 0.87. Shutouts: 11.
Final WSCA ranking: Eighth.
State tournament history: Third appearance, second in a row. Lost to Milwaukee Marquette 6-0 in the state final last year.
From the touchline: Cruised through first three playoff matches, outscoring opponents 23-1, before outlasting fourth-ranked Muskego 3-2 on penalty kicks following a 1-1 draw in the sectional final. ... Have played four of the other state qualifiers, beating Oregon 1-0 in overtime, losing to Brookfield East 2-1 and Kenosha Bradford 3-2 and tying Neenah 1-1. ... Only five seniors on the roster, but two of them – goalkeeper Kyle Ihn and defender Kevin Winter – have committed to play at UW-Green Bay next season. ... Ihn, who succeeded current Marquette freshman Mac Wheeler between the posts, has 11 shutouts. ... Sophomore Brandon Strobel (14-4) and juniors Andy Chmielewski (12-5), Josh Rieker (8-8) and John Schwalbach (6-8) lead the way for a deep attack.

Kimberly Papermakers

Coach: Carl Gardner, sixth season (77-46-12).
Record: 20-2-0 (7-2-0 Fox Valley Association, second). Last 10 games: 9-1-0.
Averages: Goals for – 4.18. Goals against – 0.68. Shutouts: 13.
Final WSCA ranking: Seventh.
State tournament history: Second appearance, first since 1983.
From the touchline: Allowed more than one goal in just two matches, accounting for both losses: 3-1 to Fond du Lac on Sept. 11 and 5-3 to Appleton North on Sept. 18. ... Won first 11 games of the season, allowing just three goals in the process. ... Have won eight consecutive games, including a 2-1 victory over third-ranked Green Bay Preble in the sectional final. ... High-scoring attack is centered around a quartet of seniors – forwards Sam Lamers (20-14), Jeremy Nji (9-9) and Henry Simon (8-4) and midfielder Tyler Kassube (17-6) – along with freshman midfielder Michael Carreon (7-3). ... Senior Mason Sauder has played every minute in goal, registering 13 clean sheets. ... Nji is a UW-Green Bay recruit.

Brookfield East Spartans

Coach: Herbie Dundun, ninth season.
Record: 14-7-3 (5-2-0 Greater Metro Conference, third). Last 10 games: 5-4-1.
Averages: Goals for – 2.54. Goals against – 0.96. Shutouts: 10.
Final WSCA ranking: 10th.
State tournament history: Record-tying 16th appearance and third in a row. Lost to Middleton 1-0 in the quarterfinals last year. Won state titles in 1995 and '97; runner-up in 1982, '87, '89, '93, '99, 2003 and '06.
From the touchline: Solid playoff run despite losing four straight games and five of seven to close the regular season. ... Three of their losses have been against state qualifiers, falling 2-1 to Kenosha Bradford and dropping 3-1 decisions to both Neenah and Milwaukee Marquette. Posted a 2-1 victory over Kettle Moraine. ... Veteran roster features 18 seniors. ... Forwards Jonathan Stone (8-1) and John Orgovan (5-1), midfielder Ryan Toy (6-1) and defender Ben Kosmider (4-3) – all seniors – are the leading scorers, while sophomore Drew Johnson has played all but 40 minutes in goal. ... Stone persevered through an injury-plagued career – he tore the ACL in his right knee in 2009, tore his hip flexor during the 2010 season and tore the ACL and meniscus in his left knee a few weeks before the 2011 season.

Eau Claire Memorial

Coach: David Kite, eighth season.
Record: 20-2-2 (12-0-0 Big Rivers Conference, first). Last 10 games: 9-0-1.
Averages: Goals for – 4.04. Goals against – 0.92. Shutouts: 12.
Final WSCA ranking: Ninth.
State tournament history: Eighth appearance, fourth in past five years.
From the touchline: Ranked second in Wisconsin by Elite Soccer Report. ... Losses were to Madison West 3-2 on Sept. 8 and Kenosha Tremper 4-0 on Sept. 15. Unbeaten in 10 games with seven clean sheets since then. ... Only three seniors on the roster. ... Junior strikers Mandlenkosi Cronk (19-7) and Scott Nicolai (16-11) and sophomore midfielder Marcus Wollak (16-11) head up the attack, which also includes sophomore forward Adam Nijhawan (7-8), sophomore midfielder Andy Frank (6-7) and senior midfielder Matt Delmastro (8-3). ... Milwaukee Marquette

Coach: Steve Lawrence, seventh season (140-20-11).
Record: 20-1-2 (7-0-0 Greater Metro Conference, first). Last 10 games: 9-1-0.
Averages: Goals for – 4.78. Goals against – 0.78. Shutouts: 11.
Final WSCA ranking: First.
State tournament history: 13th appearance, each year since 2000. Beat Kettle Moraine 6-0 to win its record eighth state title (2000, '01, '02, '03, '05, '08, '10 and '11) last year. Runner-up in 2004 and '07. Also won 15 state championships in the defunct Wisconsin Independent Schools Athletic Association.
From the touchline: Ranked 10th in the country in the Elite Soccer Report Top 50 and first in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Region VI poll. ... Unbeaten in past 42 matches (40-0-2) against Wisconsin teams, dating to a 3-1 loss to Brookfield East on Sept. 28, 2010. ... Lone loss was 4-3 to nationally ranked Cleveland St. Ignatius in the regular-season finale Oct. 6 snapped a 54-game overall unbeaten streak. ... Outscored four playoff foes 32-0. ... Allowed more than one goal four times. ... Six players have nine goals or more: senior midfielder Alex McBride (18-13), junior striker Christian Elliehausen (15-4), sophomore forward Ted Bieser (12-2), senior striker Joe Kennedy (10-6), freshman midfielder Jack Shaw (9-4) and junior forward Jackson Weiss (9-4). ... Senior Roman Vassel has 10 shutouts. ... McBride has committed to play at Marquette next season, while junior defender Danny Jarosz has committed to the Golden Eagles for 2014.
