white soccer shirtTo me, part of the fun of following soccer across the world are the shirts, the flashes of color on the field.

Many teams are instantly identified by their jerseys – think of the red worn by Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool, the blue of Chelsea, the green and white hoops of Celtic or the blaugrana of Barcelona.

Or the Brazil national team's yellow shirts, the checkerboard pattern of Croatia's jerseys or Spain's red shirts – the team's nickname is La Furia Roja (The Red Fury).

Thanks to a new rule instituted by the National Federation of State High School Associations, you'll also be able to instantly figure out which team is the home side in varsity prep games starting in fall 2012: They'll be the ones in white.

Solid white. Not even any colored trim. Pretty much as boring as possible, with only a school logo to brighten things up.

The rule, which amends the current policy that states the home team must wear "white or light" jerseys and socks, follows a similar decision that was implemented in basketball in 2008.

In announcing the rule, the NFHS wrote "the committee made this change to better differentiate between the home and visiting teams."

Really? People are having a hard time figuring out which team is the home team? Maybe I'm different, but that's never been a problem for me.

I realize that this has nothing to do with competition or the play on the field. It's just a little disappointing to lose even more of the flair of the sport.

Unless you're a Real Madrid or Leeds fan – they're known for their white shirts. But even they use a little bit of color in the trim.

Here's a quick video of Verona coach Matt Heilman and the Wildcats receiving the WIAA Division 1 state championship trophy after Saturday's 2-0 win over Mequon Homestead at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee.

Wondering if Verona senior midfielder Alex Melin is back at full strength after missing last season with a torn ACL in her knee?

I asked Madison Memorial coach Ben Voss, whose Spartans dealt the Wildcats their first loss with a 2-1 overtime decision in a Big Eight Conference match last Tuesday, that question the other day.

"Melin's the best player in the state, for sure," he said of the Iowa recruit, who was a second-team all-state selection by the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association as a sophomore.

Voss then went a step further.

"I told (Wildcats coach) Matt (Heilman) this, and I've told other people this ... I'm dead serious in saying that she would have started for our boys team," said Voss, who coached the Spartans boys team to the WIAA Division 1 state final last fall. "Her and (Memorial all-state forward Lucas) Cardona up top would have been unbeliveable."

Melin has six goals and three assists for second-ranked Verona (6-1 overall), which has beaten No. 3 Brookfield East, No. 8 Middleton, No. 9 Waunakee and Madison Edgewood – ranked fourth in Division 2.

"She's just so physical, nobody is able to push her off the ball," said Voss, whose team has a backline anchored by all-state returnee Abby Beinlich. "You have to draw so much attention to her. ... Right now, she's my player of the year."

The fifth-ranked Spartans (6-1), who have won six in a row after losing their season opener to Brookfield East, play host to No. 4 Whitefish Bay (8-0) at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Mansfield Stadium.

Top Drawer Soccer released its latest Players to Watch lists for the Class of 2011, and three Wisconsin players made the Web site's recruiting rankings.

Defender David Caban (Kenosha Tremper/Chicago Fire) is 10th in the boys rankings, while forward James Weber (Hartford/Cedarburg SC) is 34th.

On the girls side, defender Amy Kauffung (Hartland Arrowhead/FC Milwaukee), who has verbally committed to UW-Milwaukee, is 41st.

Chicago Red Stars and U.S. national team forward Lindsay Tarpley was born in Madison, but her family moved to Michigan when she was young.

Too bad for local soccer fans.

Tarpley was named the girls soccer national Player of the Decade by ESPN RISE for her career at Portage Central High School near Kalamazoo. The full team is here.

Tarpley, whose parents now live in Middleton, is recovering from a torn ACL in her right knee suffered in the final training session of the year with the Red Stars on Aug. 4.
