Scott LorenzLast season, Scott Lorenz (UW) spent time with the NSC Minnesota Stars, who went on to win the inaugural North American Soccer League title.

Now the defender has joined the team the Stars beat to win the championship: The Fort Lauderdale Strikers.

"Scott is an attacking player who we feel can play in defense and in the midfield," Strikers coach Daryl Shore said in a news release Monday. "He's a player who will create competition and has the experience to help us win a championship."

Lorenz, 24, signed with Major League Soccer's Sporting Kansas City last offseason after a breakout rookie season with NSC Minnesota in 2010.

He made one league appearance for Sporting KC, starting and playing 84 minutes in a 3-2 loss to the Chicago Fire on March 26. Lorenz also played in two U.S. Open Cup matches and nine MLS Reserve League games for the club, and made eight appearances (all starts) for the Stars before his loan was abruptly canceled.

Sporting Kansas City waived Lorenz on Nov. 23.

The Strikers (9-8-11) finished fourth in the eight-team NASL during the regular season, then thumped fifth-seeded FC Edmonton 5-0 in the playoff quarterfinals and upset No. 2 seed Puerto Rico Islanders 5-2 in a two-leg aggregate semifinal series before falling to NSC Minnesota 3-1 on aggregate in the two-match championship series.

  • Defender Greg Rosenthal (UW-Milwaukee) is set to play for the Djurgårdens Under-21 team Tuesday in a preseason friendly against the Nike Academy team in Sweden. Khaled El-Ahmad (UW-Milwaukee) is the chief scout for Djurgårdens, which plays in the top-level Allsvenskan. Rosenthal was a standout at center back for Gamla Upsala SK in the fourth-division Division 2 Norra Svealand last season.
  • Steffen Vroom, a former DePaul forward who now calls Kohler home, is on trial with second-division Swedish club Ljungskile SK. Vroom, who scored 54 goals in 56 matches in all competitions for Wolves FC in Australia's second-tier Brisbane Premier League over the past two seasons, scored for Ljungskile in a 2-1 win over Norrby IF in a preseason friendly on Saturday.
