Greg Howes opened and closed the scoring, and goalkeeper Marcel Feenstra made 19 saves as the Milwaukee Wave bounced back to beat the host Wichita Wings 9-6 in a Major Indoor Soccer League game Saturday night in the second of three straight meetings between the teams.
Giuliano Oliveiro also scored, defender Joe Hammes added a 3-pointer and Marcio Leite had two assists for Milwaukee (12-2), which dropped an 18-16 decision to the Wings (6-9) on Friday night. The teams play again Thursday night in Wichita, the end of a five-game road trip for the Wave.
Goals by Howes and Oliveiro in a 1:40 span in the first quarter proved to be the only scoring in the first half of the low-scoring game. Hammes' 3-pointer in the third was sandwiched around goals by Bryan Perez and Jamar Beasley as the Wings got back into the match.
Wichita pulled within one at 7-6 on Edvin Worley's power-play goal 11 seconds into the fourth, but Howes answered 12 seconds later with his team-best 13th goal of the season to restore the three-point lead and Milwaukee held off the Wings the rest of the way – unlike Friday's game, in which Wichita scored the final nine points to rally from a 16-9 deficit in the third quarter.
The Wave lead the Missouri Comets (10-8) by four games in the Central Division, but have played four fewer games and have six fewer losses than the second-place side. Milwaukee can clinch one of the division's two playoff berths with any combination of wins and Wichita losses totaling four.
