After missing the first day of matches at the Major League Soccer Combine, Ethan Finlay (Marshfield) more than made up for it Sunday.
The former Creighton forward logged a 17-minute hat trick in the first half as the adiPure team doubled up Prime 4-2 on the second day of games in Lauderhill, Fla. (Video highlights below)
Finlay ran onto a through ball from Sam Garza and finished against goalkeeper Jhojan Obando in the 13th minute to open the scoring; pounced on a rebound and made it 3-0 after Obando couldn't hold back-to-back shots by Japanese midfielder Kohei Yamada and Garza; and pushed the lead to 4-0 in the 30th with a deft chip over Obando after Luke Holmes found him following a pass from Yamada.
Finlay missed Friday's opening match for adiPure because he was in St. Louis for the presentation of the Hermann Trophy – he ended up as the runner-up to winner Andrew Wenger of Duke.
Yale's Brian Tompkins, a former UW-Milwaukee coach, is leading the adiPure squad, which closes the Combine against adiPower on Tuesday morning. Kickoff is set for 10:55 a.m. and the match will be streamed live on the MLS website.
Calum Mallace (Marquette) and Tony Walls (Wauwatosa East/UW-Green Bay) both started in the midfield Sunday as adiPower, coached by Maryland's Sasho Cirovski (UW-Milwaukee), got past adiZero 2-1 for its second straight win.
Finlay moved up some mock draft boards after his strong performance, while Mallace remains a consensus first-round pick and Walls is considered a likely draftee.
The three MLSSoccer.com staffers who did mock drafts before the Combine posted updated predictions Monday, with a final version to come Wednesday, the day before the MLS SuperDraft. All three Wisconsin players also were included in Sunday's SB Nation mock draft, in which bloggers made the picks for the teams they cover.
Calum Mallace
Simon Borg: No. 8 (1st round) to Portland Timbers. Same as pre-Combine. Jason Saghini: No. 10 (1st) to Columbus Crew. Same as pre-Combine. Travis Clark: No. 17 (1st) to Real Salt Lake. Same as pre-Combine. SB Nation: No. 17 (1st) to Real Salt Lake.
Ethan Finlay
Clark: No. 7 (1st) to D.C. United. "In need of depth on the wings up front, the versatile Finlay is an intriguing option who can play both positions and contribute right away." Borg: No. 10 (1st) to Columbus Crew. "Can play either wing and gives Robert Warzycha the option of moving Eddie Gaven into central midfield if necessary." Saghini: No. 15 (1st) to Seattle Sounders. "Finlay's versatility in the attacking end adds valuable depth to a team that will play a lot of games in 2012." SB Nation: No. 22 (2nd) to New England Revolution
Tony Walls
Borg: No. 29 (2nd) to Columbus Crew. "Still searching for a steady holding midfielder and unsure about how Danny O'Rourke will hold up, Walls makes for a strong ball-winner who will dish to the more creative players. Can also play center back." Saghini: No. 33 (2nd) to San Jose Earthquakes. Same as pre-Combine. SB Nation: No. 18 (1st) to Houston Dynamo.
Joe Mauceri, who covers college soccer for TopDrawerSoccer.com, also is attending the Combine.
Mauceri praised Mallace's play each of the first two days, noting that he "continues to impress with his unbridled enthusiasm and his motor." Following Friday's match, he wrote that Mallace "brought his 'A' game. If he continues, an MLS contract is inevitable. Very active. His touch was precise and sharp. ... Very dynamic play."
On Sunday, Mauceri commented Finlay was "my man of the match, and I wouldn't be surprised if he's everyone's man of the match. Finlay scored a hat trick. He was quick and precise on his shot."
Mauceri didn't have any opinion on Walls following Friday's game and after Sunday's match, he wrote that Walls "started slow with an uncontrolled pass; calmed down a little ... He needs to inject more terror in the middle."

Lauren Sesselmann (Green Bay Notre Dame), who started her career as an attacker but has developed into a defender for the Atlanta Beat, re-signed with the Women's Professional Soccer team for the 2012 season.
