Major League SoccerThree players with state ties are on the initial list of players invited to participate in next month's Major League Soccer Player Combine.

UW-Green Bay midfielder Tony Walls (Wauwatosa East), Marquette midfielder Calum Mallace and Creighton forward Ethan Finlay (Marshfield) are among the 52 college seniors selected to attend the combine, which is Jan. 6 to 10 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

The combine gives the league's 19 teams one final chance to evaluate players before the MLS SuperDraft on Jan. 12 in Kansas City, Mo. More players will be added to the rosters in the coming weeks.

Walls had seven goals and five assists for the Phoenix (11-7-1) this fall and finished his career with 18 goals (six game-winners) and 12 assists.

Mallace was the Big East Conference Midfielder of the Year this season, when he had three goals and six assists in helping lead the Golden Eagles (9-8-2) to their first Blue Division championship. He had 13 goals and 13 assists in his career, with eight of his goals game-winners.

Finlay, a two-time Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year, is one of 15 semifinalists for the Hermann Trophy and is the leading scorer for the Bluejays (21-2-0), who play Charlotte in the NCAA College Cup semifinals Friday. He has 14 goals and six assists this season and is among the top career scorers in Creighton and MVC history with 43 goals and 17 assists.

Yale coach Brian Tompkins, the former UW-Milwaukee men's coach, will be one of the coaches for the combine.
