No players with Wisconsin ties were taken by the Montreal Impact and coach Jesse Marsch (Racine) in today's Major League Soccer expansion draft.
However, two former University of Wisconsin teammates were waived by their teams after the draft: Sporting Kansas City released defender Scott Lorenz and the New York Red Bulls cut ties with goalkeeper Alex Horwath.
Lorenz, 24, made one MLS appearance for Sporting KC, starting and playing 84 minutes in his league debut, a 3-2 loss to the Chicago Fire back on March 26. He also played in two U.S. Open Cup matches and nine Reserve League matches for the team, and made eight appearances for NSC Minnesota during a loan spell with the North American Soccer League that was ended early.
Horwath, 24, also played in his first MLS match on March 26, making five saves for the shutout in a 0-0 draw with the Columbus Crew in his first-team debut. He was a regular for the Red Bulls in the Reserve League, posting a 2-5-0 record and a 2.40 goals-against average with one shutout. - Midfielder JC Banks (Milwaukee Riverside/UW-Green Bay), the Rochester Rhinos' Rookie of the Year last season, will be back with the USL Pro side in 2012 after the team picked up its option on his contract. Banks, 22, had three goals and five assists in 28 matches overall in 2011.
