Matt Pyzdrowski (Marquette) was in the middle of some incredible drama Saturday.
His Ängelholms FF side played host to Hammarby on the final day of the season in the Superettan, Sweden's second division. Ängelholms went into the day knowing that a win and a loss by GIF Sundsvall would give them automatic promotion to the Allsvenskan next year. Any other results would mean Ängelholms would need to beat Syrianska, the 14th-place team in the Allsvenskan, in a two-leg series to claim a spot in the top division for 2012.
All eight Superettan matches kicked off at the same time. GIF Sundsvall took the lead against host Jönköpings Södra IF, but the host team scored twice in seven minutes to take a 2-1 lead. Hammarby, meanwhile, saw that other results showed it needed to win or it would be relegated to Division 1 next year.
Both teams attacked at will, combining for 34 shots in the match. Ängelholms fired 21 shots, putting 10 on goal, while Pyzdrowski turned away six shots.
But in the final seconds of the fifth and final minute of stoppage time, Sebastian Bojassén scored his first goal of the season off a corner kick as Hammarby won 1-0 to avoid relegation and keep Ängelholms from automatic promotion. (Video highlights below)
Ängelholms (15-7-8) finished with 53 points, while GIF Sundsvall (16-7-7) had 55 and champion Åtvidabergs FF (18-9-3) had 57. Ängelholms will play Syrianska on Thursday and Sunday in a total goals series to determine the final spot in the Allsvenskan for 2012.
Pyzdrowski played every minute in goal for Ängelholms in the 30-game season, posting a 1.33 goals-against average and eight shutouts.
