Matt Pyzdrowski (Marquette) stopped all seven shots he faced for his seventh shutout of the season as host Ängelholms FF moved into first place in Sweden's Superettan with a 2-0 victory over Åtvidabergs FF on Monday. Ängelholms (14-4-7) is one point ahead of Åtvidabergs (15-7-3) and three in front of GIF Sundsvall (13-5-7) in the second division league with five matches left – the top two teams earn automatic promotion to the top-level Allsvenskan for next season, while the third-place team qualifies for a promotion playoff.
Wolves FC forward Steffen Vroom, a former DePaul player who now calls Kohler his home, is the leading scorer in the Brisbane Premier League, one of several leagues that are considered the second division in Australia. He had 25 goals in 26 regular-season matches for Wolves (22-3-1), then scored what proved to be the game-winner Sept. 10 as the club beat Rochedale Rovers 2-1 to advance to the Grand Final. The teams will meet again next Sunday for the championship after Rovers came back through the playoff system – second-place Rochedale also eliminated Wolves 3-1 in the semifinals of the Canale Cup. Vroom had three goals in four Cup matches, making his season tally 29 goals in 31 games.
Also in Australia, David Perich (Cardinal Stritch) was and 83rd-minute substitute as third-seeded Inglewood United (11-9-4) lost to fourth-seeded Sorrento 3-1 after extra time Saturday in the minor semifinal of the All Flags Finals, the playoffs of the Football West Premier League. The match report noted that Perich nearly scored a late winner in second-half stoppage time. Paul Dugdale (Cardinal Stritch) wasn't on the game-day roster for Inglewood United.
The Milwaukee Wave's closest local rival in the Major Indoor Soccer League now has a name: the Chicago Kick.
