Wisconsin ProsAfter trials with teams across Sweden, Andy Stadler (Wauwatosa West) signed with Sandvikens IF this week.

Sandvikens (6-2-3) is second in the Division 2 Norra Svealand, one of six leagues across Sweden that comprises the country's fourth division.

Central defender Greg Rosenthal (UW-Milwaukee) also plays in the league with Gamla Upsala SK, which is in fourth place and plays Sandvikens when the league resumes July 30.

The 23-year-old Stadler, who had a standout career at George Washington, also had trials at Färila IF, IK Brage and GIF Sundsvall over the past few weeks along with Nermin Crnkic, an 18-year-old from Michigan who also signed with Sandvikens.

James Weber (Hartford), the leading goal scorer in Wisconsin prep boys soccer history who has signed to play at Xavier in the fall, also was part of at least two of the trials.

All three played in two matches with Division 4 Färila, with Weber scoring six goals and Stadler adding three in two lopsided victories (12-0 and 5-0). The sixth-division team had been 0-8-1 with just six goals before their arrival. Amazingly, Weber is tied for fourth in the league in goals.

GIF Sundsvall is in the top-level Allsvenskan, while IK Brage is in the second-division Superettan.

Stadler ranks fourth in George Washington history with 35 goals in 60 career games (34 starts) and fifth with 83 points, and had 27 goals in 29 matches over his final two seasons with the Colonials (2008 and '09). Most recently, he was playing with the Croatian Eagles in the Wisconsin Adult Soccer Association Major League.

  • Rosenthal was a guest player as IK Sirius of Division 1 Norra (third division) dropped a 3-1 decision to Leicester City of England's nPower Championship in a friendly Tuesday. Rosenthal originally signed with GUSK through June, but extended his contract for the remainder of the 2011 season.
  • Katie Bethke (Eau Claire Memorial) was released by the Atlanta Beat of Women's Professional Soccer earlier this month and signed with Arna-Bjørnar of the Toppserien, Norway's top division. Bethke played 161 minutes in four matches (two starts) as a rookie with the Beat. Arna-Bjørnar, which is located in the Bergen suburb of Arna in western Norway, is in third place in the 12-team Toppserien with a 5-3-1 record with 13 matches left. The season resumes July 26; on July 30, Bethke and Arna-Bjørnar play Shannon Smyth (Mequon/Milwaukee DSHA) and Amazon Grimstad.
  • Ashley Bares (Ozaukee/Marquette) netted a hat trick in just eight minutes as Stjarnan powered past host Breiðablik 4-0 on Wednesday to move into first place in Iceland's Úrvalsdeild. Bares scored in the 52nd, 56th and 59th minutes and leads the league with 11 goals in nine matches.
  • Captain and central defender Aaron Hohlbein (Middleton/UW) missed the Fort Lauderdale Strikers' 1-1 draw with the Montreal Impact in North American Soccer League play Wednesday night because of a nagging knee injury and will be sidelined the next few weeks. Hohlbein has played the full 90 minutes in all 14 of his appearances, and Wednesday was the second match he's missed because of the knee injury. He's hoping to be back in action by the end of the month.
  • Milwaukee Wave forward Marco Terminesi, the leading goal scorer for the Major Indoor Soccer League champions last winter, signed with the Impact for the rest of the season. He'll return to the Wave for the 2011-12 MISL season, according a Wave news release.
