Lindsay TarpleyWhat started out as a terrific week for Lindsay Tarpley (Madison) came to a devastating end.

The magicJack midfielder tore the ACL in her right knee for the second time in two years during the U.S. women's national team's 2-0 victory over Japan in a friendly in Columbus, Ohio.

Tarpley, 27, was named to her first Women's World Cup roster last Monday, but now will miss this summer's tournament in Germany.

"Obviously, I’m extremely disappointed, but I believe that things happen for a reason and I know that I’ll grow and learn from this," Tarpley said in a U.S. Soccer news release.

"I had a long road back to recovery after my last surgery and one of my main goals was to get myself healthy and competing at a level that would give me the opportunity to make this World Cup team. I have had the fortunate pleasure to be on a lot of great teams, but making this roster probably gave me the most satisfaction of any team I have been on. I proved to myself that I could do it."

Tarpley ranks 20th in U.S. women's national team history with 125 caps and has scored 32 goals, including two in six matches since returning from the torn ACL she suffered in August 2009 during a late-season training session with the Chicago Red Stars.

"It is sad to lose Tarp, as she is a fantastic person and a great player," U.S. manager Pia Sundhage said in the release. "She will be missed on and off the field."

Tarpley played all 90 minutes in magicJack's first three matches of the season and had one assist.
