Lindsay Tarpley (Madison) celebrated her first start for the U.S. women's national team in nearly 18 months in fine fashion Friday.
Tarpley scored the 28th goal of her international career in the 34th minute, helping the U.S. to a 2-0 victory over Norway at the Algarve Cup in Vila Real de San Antonio, Portugal. (Video below)
Amy Rodriguez beat two defenders and got on the end of a long ball out of the back and back-heeled the ball to Tarpley, who finished from 9 yards out to give the U.S. a 1-0 lead.
It was Tarpley's second goal of the year; her other goal also was a game-winner against Canada on Jan. 23 at the Four Nations Tournament in China. Tarpley's most recent start was July 22, 2009, against Canada in Charleston, S.C.
The U.S. (2-0) faces Finland at 9 a.m. Monday in its pool-play finale at the tournament, but already has clinched a berth in Wednesday's final.
