Lindsay Tarpley (Madison) set up the opening goal and scored the game-winner in the 70th minute as the U.S. women's national team got past Canada 2-1 Sunday at the Four Nations Tournament in Chongqing, China. (Video below)
It was Tarpley's 31st international goal, moving her past Brandi Chastain into sole possession of 11th place on the U.S. all-time list, and was her first since she scored against Canada on May 25, 2009.
Tarpley, who wasn't on the game-day roster for Friday's 2-1 loss to Sweden, came on as a sub for Megan Rapinoe in the 31st minute and played an integral part in the victory.
She nearly opened the scoring in the 51st minute, slamming a shot off the crossbar. Three minutes later, she had her back to the goal when a cross from Kelley O’Hara came into the box. Tarpley flicked the ball to the onrushing Lauren Cheney, who finished from the left side to give the U.S. the lead.
Canada equalized two minutes later, and Cheney and Tarpley reversed their roles to create the Americans' winner. Cheney threaded a pass to Tarpley on the left side of the box, and Tarpley's left-footed shot got past Canadian keeper Karina LeBlanc just inside the far post.
The U.S., which lost to Sweden 2-1 in its opener, closes the tournament at 4:35 a.m. Tuesday against China.
