CanadaJust more than a month into her international career, Lauren Sesselmann (Green Bay Notre Dame) already has won a gold medal.

Sesselmann started and played 77 minutes Thursday night as Canada won the gold at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, topping two-time defending champion Brazil 4-3 on penalty kicks following a 1-1 draw in the final at Estadio Omnilife.

It was the second tie of the tournament between the teams, who played out a 0-0 draw in a Group B finale on Saturday. Brazil went ahead early Thursday, with Debora scoring in the fourth minute, and the Samba Queens held the slim lead until Canadian star striker Christine Sinclair equalized in the 87th.

Marquette sophomore Vanessa Legault-Cordisco and University of Wisconsin recruit Diamond Simpson were unused subs for Canada in the final, but both saw action during the group stage.

Sesselmann, 28, received dual citizenship last year – her father is Canadian – and made her debut for Canada on Sept. 17 against the United States. The left back has played in all seven of the team's matches since then, starting five.
