Lauren Sesselmann (Green Bay Notre Dame) set up Robyn Gayle's 88th-minute winner as the Canadian women's national team slipped past Colombia 2-1 on Tuesday night in Guadalajara, Mexico, to advance to the championship game of the Pan American Games.
Sesselmann served a free kick into the box that Gayle chested down and finished to send the Canadians to a rematch with Brazil in Thursday's final at Omnilife Stadium. Gayle's first international goal came seven minutes after the Colombians had equalized.
It also was the first assist with the national team for Sesselmann, a 28-year-old Green Bay native who acquired dual citizenship last year and played all 90 minutes at left back in her sixth career cap. Marquette's Vanessa Legault-Cordisco and University of Wisconsin recruit Diamond Simpson were unused subs for the Canadians.
Canada and two-time defending Pan Am Games champion Brazil played to a 0-0 draw in the Group B finale on Saturday. Brazil beat Mexico 1-0 in Tuesday's other semifinal.
- The draw for CONCACAF women's Olympic qualifying was held Monday, and the U.S. was placed in Group B with Mexico, Guatemala and the Dominican Republic. Canada, meanwhile, was drawn with Costa Rica, Cuba and Haiti for the tournament, which is Jan. 19 to 29 at BC Place in Vancouver. Two teams will qualify for the 2012 Olympics, which are July 27 to Aug. 12 in London. The U.S. won the qualifier in 2004 and '08.
