Lauren SesselmannAtlanta Beat defender Lauren Sesselmann (Green Bay Notre Dame) started at left back as the Canadian women's national team lost to the U.S. 3-0 in a friendly watched by a crowd of 18,570 on Thursday night at Jeld-Wen Field in Portland, Ore.

Sesselmann, 28, played 75 minutes in her second career cap, having made her international debut in Saturday's 1-1 draw with the Americans in Kansas City. The Green Bay native acquired dual citizenship last year, as her father is Canadian.

Defender Diamond Simpson, an 18-year-old who has signed a national letter of intent to play for the University of Wisconsin, came on in the 89th minute and earned her third cap for Canada.

Abby Wambach scored in the 63rd and 70th minutes for the U.S., taking her career international goal total to 125, and Alex Morgan added a goal in stoppage time.

  • The Americans continued their long run atop the FIFA world rankings – the U.S. has been No. 1 since 2008.
  • Meanwhile, the U.S. men's team dropped three places to 31st in the FIFA rankings. The only other time the Americans have been that low in the history of the rankings, which started in 1993, was in 2006.
  • Amazon Grimstad's Shannon Smyth (Mequon/Milwaukee DSHA) played the full 90 minutes as the Republic of Ireland fell to Women's World Cup semifinalist France 3-1 in a UEFA Euro 2013 qualifier Thursday night in Cork, Ireland.
