Another Wisconsinite is poised to play international soccer – but not for the U.S.
Atlanta Beat defender Lauren Sesselmann (Green Bay Notre Dame) was named to the 22-player training camp roster for the Canadian women's national team ahead of two matches against the U.S.
Sesselmann, 28, was born in Green Bay but is eligible for Canadian citizenship because her father was born there. She acquired dual citizenship last year, and this is her first call-up to the national team.
Canada plays the Americans on Saturday in Kansas City, Kan. (6 p.m., Fox Soccer), and next Thursday in Portland, Ore. (10 p.m., ESPN2). The camp and games mark the debut of new Canadian coach John Herdman.
"We will start to lay the foundation for a fresh start," Herdman said. "We will have a look at our pool of players as well as some of the young players."
Sesselman, who played collegiately at Purdue, has been with the Beat the past two seasons in Women's Professional Soccer after making one appearance for Sky Blue FC in 2009. She had primarily been an attacking player, but has regularly appeared as a fullback for Atlanta.
Also on the Canadian roster is defender Diamond Simpson, who signed a national letter of intent to play at the University of Wisconsin. The 18-year-old Simpson, the country's Under-17 Player of the Year in 2010, already has two caps with the full national team.

Shannon Smyth (Mequon/Milwaukee DSHA) was called into the Republic of Ireland squad for two upcoming Euro 2013 qualifiers – Saturday away to Wales and Thursday against 2011 Women's World Cup semifinalist France in Cork, Ireland. Smyth, who plays for Amazon Grimstad in Norway's Toppserien, has earned three caps with Ireland, the country of her father's birth.
