Donal Kaehler, who led the Madison West girls soccer program to two WIAA Division 1 state titles before resigning in 2008, has guided another team to a state championship.
Rocky Mountain beat two-time defending champion Boise 1-0 in overtime to win the Idaho High School Activities Association 5A girls state championship last Saturday in Meridian.
The Grizzlies had lost to Boise in the state tournament each of the past two seasons, falling in the 2009 state final and in the semifinals last year. Kaehler, a former Delavan-Darien athlete, moved to Idaho and started the Rocky Mountain program when the school opened in fall 2008 after stepping down at West due to frustrations over increasing administrative duties. The Grizzlies went 2-13-0 in their first season, but have finished second, third and now first in Idaho's largest division over the past three years.
Kaehler compiled a 235-70-40 record in 14 seasons at West, leading the Regents to seven state berths, titles in 1999 and 2000 and a runner-up finish in 1995.
