WIAAThe 29th annual WIAA girls soccer state tournament kicks off Thursday at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee with the Division 1 quarterfinals.

It's the first time the event is being played on the FieldTurf surface that was installed at Uihlein's Time Warner Cable Field last fall. If you can't make it to Milwaukee, all games will be streamed live on www.foxsportswisconsin.com.

Here's a look at the eight teams that hope to raise the gold ball after Saturday's Division 1 state final, succeeding Verona as state champion.

River Falls Wildcats

Coach: Charles Conley, first season (19-0-1).

Averages: Goals for – 4.10. Goals against – 0.05. Shutouts: 19.
Final WSCA ranking: Honorable mention.
State tournament history: First appearance.
From the touchline: Have outscored opponents 85-1, with 17 consecutive shutouts since allowing only goal of the season in a 1-1 draw against Eau Claire Memorial on April 21. ... Handed Eau Claire Memorial its only losses with 1-0 decisions, with the teams' sectional semifinal matchup going into overtime. ... Senior F Sarah Vitale leads the team with 30 goals and 14 assists, and had all three goals in a 3-0 win over Schofield D.C. Everest in the sectional finals. Junior F Bailey LaPoint has added 14 goals and senior M Taylor Kizlik has 10. ... Junior GK Paige Meyer has stopped 68 of 69 shots on the season.

Kimberly Papermakers

Coach: Kristin Ruhsam Tegelman, sixth season (66-37-5).
Record: 20-5-1 (5-4-0 Fox Valley Association, fifth). Last 10 games: 10-0-0.
Averages: Goals for – 3.62. Goals against – 0.46. Shutouts: 19.
Final WSCA ranking: Not ranked.
State tournament history: Second appearance, lost in 2005 quarterfinals.
From the touchline: Have won 10 straight games since a 2-1 loss to Fond du Lac on May 17, allowing just one goal in the process. ... Posted two 1-0 overtime wins in the postseason, over Green Bay Southwest in a regional final and Bay Port in a sectional final. ... Four players have 10 goals or more: Senior M-F Megan White (18), senior F Marlee Buss (13), freshman F Caylee Mazemke (12) and sophomore M-F Sydney Buss (11). White also has a team-best 14 assists. ... Buss will play at NCAA Division II Michigan Tech in the fall. ... Went 3-5-0 during eight-game stretch midway through the season.

Madison Memorial Spartans

Coach: Ben Voss, fourth season (70-15-12).
Record: 17-5-5 (9-0-0 Big Eight Conference). Last 10 games: 9-0-1.
Averages: Goals for – 2.85. Goals against – 0.70. Shutouts: 12.
Final WSCA ranking: Fifth.
State tournament history: 12th appearance, first since 2009. Won single-division state titles in 1986 and '87.
From the touchline: Unbeaten in past 16 matches (13-0-3) since starting the season 4-5-2. ... Lost to quarterfinal opponent Appleton North 2-1 back on April 8. ... Senior GK Katy Pilarzyk is a UW-Green Bay recruit, while senior D Dana Robertson is headed to UNC-Charlotte. Four other seniors plan to play in Division II or III next season. ... Recorded one-goal victories over No. 9 Verona (1-0 in overtime) and No. 6 Waunakee (2-1) in the sectionals. ... Four of five losses have come by one goal.

Appleton North Lightning

Coach: John Wuebben.
Record: 21-0-0 (9-0-0 Fox Valley Association). Last 10 games: 10-0-0.
Averages: Goals for – 3.05. Goals against – 0.33. Shutouts: 16.
Final WSCA ranking: Third.
State tournament history: Fourth appearance, first since 2008.
From the touchline: Have allowed just seven goals on the season, with four of those coming in two matches. ... Sophomore F Meg Riebau (22 goals), junior M Kati Baker (13) and junior M Maria Lillge (5 goals, 10 assists) pace the attack, while senior GK Alex Dennee has given up just five goals in 20 starts (0.25 goals-against average). ... Victory over Madison Memorial in season opener was first of seven one-goal matches. Among those was a win over Oshkosh West in the sectional finals that was one of their five 1-0 victories.

Grafton Black Hawks

Coach: Don Arnold.
Record: 19-2-3 (5-1-1 North Shore Conference, shared title with Mequon Homestead). Last 10 games: 9-1-0.
Averages: Goals for – 3.32. Goals against – 0.71. Shutouts: 17.
Final WSCA ranking: Second.
State tournament history: Ninth appearance, fourth in a row. Won Division 2 title in 1997; single-division runner-up in 1988; Division 2 runner-up in 2010.
From the touchline: Earned share of conference title for the first time. ... Beat quarterfinal foe Whitefish Bay 2-1 on May 3. ... Avenged only loss to a Wisconsin team by beating Cedarburg 2-1 in sectional finals. Lost to Cedarburg 1-0 on May 26; other loss was 2-1 to Hilton Head Prep (S.C.) on May 31 – Hilton Head Prep advanced to the SCISAA Class 3-A semifinals. ... Shut out three times, all in 0-0 draws, against Mequon Homestead, Neenah and Eau Claire Memorial. ... Scored five goals or more eight times. ... Four juniors have scored 10 goals or more, led by F Hannah Eichler, who has more than 20 goals. ... Only one senior on the roster.

Whitefish Bay Blue Dukes

Coach: Robert Williams (55-30-7 overall, 46-21-4 at Whitefish Bay).
Record: 14-8-2 (3-3-1 North Shore Conference, fifth). Last 10 games: 6-4-0 (two wins by forfeit).
Averages: Goals for – 1.96. Goals against – 0.83. Shutouts: 11.
Final WSCA ranking: Honorable mention.
State tournament history: Record 17th appearance, first since 2007. Won single-division titles in 1983, '84, '85 and '94 and Division 2 titles in 1998, '99 and 2000; Division 2 runners-up in 1997, 2001 and '05.
From the touchline: Only team in Division 1 field averaging fewer than two goals per match. ... Shut out in seven of eight losses. ... Played much of the season without two top players, as senior F Lydia Kaminsky and junior F Abby Starker suffered knee injuries early in the year. Kaminsky is a Loyola (Ill.) recruit, while Starker was the team's leading scorer in 2010 and was coming back after a torn ACL. ... After losing to perennial state power Milwaukee DSHA in the sectionals three straight years, knocked off the Dashers 1-0 in the sectional finals on a goal by freshman D Erin Corrigan. ... First two playoffs matches were forfeit wins and the third was a 10-0 rout.

Waukesha West Wolverines

Coach: David Zindler, 19th season overall (270-119-41) and 18th season at Waukesha West (264-107-40).
Record: 21-0-3 (7-0-0 Classic Eight Conference). Last 10 games: 9-0-1.
Averages: Goals for – 2.54. Goals against – 0.42. Shutouts: 17.
Final WSCA ranking: Fourth.
State tournament history: Sixth appearance and fifth in a row. Runner-up in 2009.
From the touchline: Have allowed just 10 goals on the season and only one over the past 16 matches, with 10 consecutive clean sheets. That includes a 19-0 scoring advantage in four postseason games. ... Senior M Leah Seib is a UW-Green Bay recruit and senior M Angie Berens will play at Central Michigan, while junior F Cassie Blase has committed to Belmont for 2012. ... Leading scorer Caysi Shouse will play at Division II Central Missouri. ... Nine one-goal games, shut out in two of their three draws.

Kenosha Tremper Trojans

Coach: Todd Hardy, 15th season (246-102-19).
Record: 16-8-1 (7-0-0 Southeast Conference). Last 10 games: 7-2-1.
Averages: Goals for – 3.84. Goals against – 1.64. Shutouts: 10.
Final WSCA ranking: Not ranked.
State tournament history: Eighth appearance, first since streak of six straight from 2001 to '06. Only quarterfinal win in 2004.
From the touchline: Lost first six matches of the season, allowing 22 goals in the process, then won 11 straight games. ... Have outscored four playoff foes 29-1. ... The senior F duo of Alyx Dever (22 goals, 6 assists) and Jessie Laurenzi (18 and 9) and junior M Tara Larson (12 and 9) are keys to the Trojans' attack.
