With all but one WIAA girls soccer sectional semifinals set for Thursday night – one will be played Friday – six matches stand out among the 32 games scheduled across the state.
Five of them feature ranked teams squaring off against one another, including matchups between the state's top-ranked teams in divisions 2 and 3 and the top four teams in the Division 2 state poll.
Here's a look at six marquee matches, along with the complete sectional schedule:
Division 1
Wausau East sectional
Eau Claire Memorial (16-1-6) at River Falls (18-0-1), 5:30 p.m. Neither team is ranked, as both earned honorable mention in the final Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association poll of the season, but this should be a good one. The host Falcons have outscored opponents 81-1 this season and have posted 15 straight shutouts since a 1-1 draw against Memorial in a Big Rivers Conference match back on April 21. The teams met again May 17 with River Falls winning 1-0, dealing the Old Abes their only loss of the season.
Middleton sectional
No. 9 Verona (15-3-2) vs. No. 5 Madison Memorial (15-5-5), 7 p.m. at Warner Park. Memorial started the year 4-5-2, but the Spartans are unbeaten in their past 14 matches (11-0-3) and beat defending state champion Verona 1-0 in a Big Eight Conference game on April 14. Whichever team advances, they'll meet a familiar foe – the Wildcats and Memorial both tied sixth-ranked Waunakee and posted 2-0 victories over Middleton, the teams in the other semifinal.
Brookfield East sectional
No. 8 Cedarburg (14-3-1) at No. 1 Mequon Homestead (18-1-2), 7 p.m. The host Highlanders are unbeaten in their past nine matches (8-0-1), including six consecutive clean sheets. Homestead beat the Bulldogs 3-2 on April 28 in North Shore Conference action – that was one of nine one-goal games Cedarburg has played. The Bulldogs are 7-2-0 in those matches, including their past four (all wins).
Division 2
Mount Horeb sectional
No. 4 Sugar River (21-1-1) at No. 3 Madison Edgewood (13-2-6), 7 p.m. at Breese Stevens Field. The Raiders have won 14 in a row since their lone loss, 2-1 to Oregon on May 5, and have one of the state's leading scorers in UW-Green Bay recruit Hannah Kernen (37 goals, 17 assists). Edgewood has played a challenging schedule, with its losses coming by one goal to Verona and Madison Memorial and ties against Waunakee and Cedarburg – all ranked Division 1 teams.
Pewaukee sectional
No. 2 Pewaukee (21-1-1) vs. No. 1 Waukesha Catholic Memorial (17-6-2), 5 p.m. at Carroll University. The Pirates are 10-0-1 since their only loss, 2-0 to Grafton on May 7, and haven't allowed a goal in seven matches. Defending state champion Catholic Memorial has been atop the Division 2 state poll all season and has advanced to state five consecutive years, winning the title three times.
Division 3
New Holstein sectional
No. 2 Menasha St. Mary Central (22-1-1) vs. No. 1 Winnebago Lutheran (20-0-0), 7 p.m. at Fond du Lac Soccer Complex. St. Mary Central gets a shot to avenge its lone loss, a 5-1 thumping by the Vikings on May 20. The match features four of the state's top scorers: Lexi Herrewig (41 goals, 17 assists) and Katelyn Kuehl (37, 14) for Winnebago Lutheran and sisters Leisa Conn (35, 23) and Kelly Conn (30, 8) for the Zephyrs. St. Mary Central has qualified for state the past six years.
