The WIAA released the brackets for its girls soccer tournament Friday, allowing teams across the three divisions to chart their paths to Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee for next month's state tournament.
Three sectionals include three teams that are ranked in this week's Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association state polls: the Brookfield East and Middleton sectionals in Division 1 and the New Holstein sectional in Division 3. Seeding for the tournament was done by coaches in each sectional.
The top two teams in the Division 1 rankings, No. 1 Grafton (19-2-3) and No. 2 Mequon Homestead (16-1-2), received the top two seeds in the Brookfield East sectional, which also includes 10th-ranked and sixth-seeded Cedarburg (12-3-1). All three teams play in the North Shore Conference.
Fifth-ranked Waunakee (17-1-4) is the No. 1 seed in the Middleton sectional and could take on No. 6 Madison Memorial in a sectional final, but the second-seeded Spartans (12-5-5) could need to get past ninth-ranked and third-seeded Verona (13-3-2) – the defending state champion – in the semifinals.
The state's top-ranked Division 3 side, Winnebago Lutheran (17-0-0), is seeded first in the upper half of the New Holstein sectional and could face second-ranked and second-seeded Menasha St. Mary Central (19-1-1) in the semifinals. No. 5 Oostburg (15-2-3) is the No. 1 seed in the bottom half of the bracket.
Five more sectionals have two ranked teams apiece.
In Division 1, the Oshkosh West sectional includes fourth-ranked Appleton North (17-0-0) and seventh-ranked Neenah (15-1-6), while the Whitefish Bay sectional features the host and eighth-ranked Blue Dukes (9-7-2) and perennial state power Milwaukee DSHA (9-9-1).
The top two teams in the Division 2 poll, No. 1 Waukesha Catholic Memorial (15-5-2) and No. 2 Pewaukee (18-1-1), are in the Pewaukee sectional, while third-ranked Madison Edgewood (10-2-6) and fifth-ranked Sugar River (19-1-1) are in the Mount Horeb sectional. Those teams could meet in sectional semifinals.
In the Division 3 Kettle Moraine Lutheran sectional, third-ranked Kenosha Christian Life (15-2-0) and No. 4 fourth-ranked Brookfield Academy (17-3-2) are the top seeds in their respective halves of the bracket.
The tournament kicks off Thursday with the regional semifinals, with regional finals on Saturday, June 4. Sectional semifinals are Thursday, June 9, and the 16 sectional finals are set for Saturday, June 11. The state tournament is June 16 to 18.
