For the third year in a row, the Gatorade Wisconsin player of the year for girls soccer is from the Madison area.
Madison La Follette senior forward Morgan LaPlant claimed the prestigious honor, following in the footsteps of Waunakee's Taylor Madigan (2009) and Verona's Alex Melin (2010).
LaPlant, a UW-Milwaukee recruit, had 12 goals and four assists for the Lancers (7-2-1 overall) heading into Thursday night's Big Eight Conference match against Madison East.
She is the leading scorer in program history with 104 goals and counting in her four-year career, and had added 22 assists. LaPlant has been named to the Best of the Rest on the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association all-state team the past two years and has earned All-Big Eight and Madison All-City honors each of her first three seasons.
"She’s quick to the ball, has an excellent first touch and sees the field very well. She’s just dominant at her position," Oregon coach Julie Grutzner said in a news release.
Grutzner previously held the La Follette record for goals, scoring 64 times from 1988 to '91, and her team lost to the Lancers 2-0 earlier this season.
The Gatorade award recognizes not only excellence in competition, but also high standards in the areas of academics and character. LaPlant has a 3.70 grade-point average, is a religious education instructor at her church, volunteers for the Salvation Army and has participated in service-mission trips to repair homes for the underprivileged.
