For the fourth straight year, the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association Player of the Year for girls soccer is from the Madison area.
Sugar River senior midfielder Hannah Kernen earned the honor, becoming the first player from a WIAA Division 2 school to claim the award since Waukesha Catholic Memorial's Jennifer Baumann did so in 2006 and '07.
Kernen, a UW-Green Bay recruit from Belleville High School, finished her career with 130 goals and 45 assists and was the Capitol Conference Player of the Year all four years.
She was one of seven players from the Madison area among the 11 named to the first-team WSCA all-state team.
Madison Memorial goalkeeper Katy Pilarzyk (11 shutouts) and defender McKenna Meuer, Verona defender Abby Juzwik (10 goals, 8 assists), Madison Edgewood midfielder Hannah Elfman (7 goals, 8 assists), Waunakee midfielder Molly Laufenberg and Madison La Follette forward Morgan LaPlant – the Gatorade Wisconsin Player of the Year – joined Kernen on the top squad.
Laufenberg and Meuer were two of the four underclassmen chosen for the team, along with Cedarburg sophomore midfielder Josee Stievers and Grafton junior forward Hannah Eichler (22 goals, 13 assists). Meuer was listed on the all-state release as a defender despite being an All-Big Eight Conference selection for the Spartans as a midfielder.
Catholic Memorial senior forward Nikki Condit (13 goals, 8 assists) received first-team status for the third consecutive season, while Pilarzyk was a repeat selection. Elfman, Juzwik, Kernen, LaPlant, Meuer, Stievers and Mequon Homestead senior defender Lindsey Jagla moved up after claiming "Best of the Rest" honors in 2010.
Juzwik and Pilarzyk are headed to UW-Green Bay in the fall along with Kernen, while LaPlant signed with UW-Milwaukee and Condit will play at DePaul. Laufenberg has verbally committed to the University of Wisconsin for 2012.
Kernen follows Middleton goalkeeper Lauren Gunderson (2008), Waunakee midfielder Taylor Madigan (2009) and Verona midfielder Alex Melin (2010) as Madison-area players named Player of the Year. Gunderson is now at the University of Wisconsin, Madigan plays at Marquette and Melin is a starter at Iowa.
Division 2 state champion Edgewood and Division 1 state quarterfinalist Madison Memorial had the most overall selections with four apiece.
