Mark Newman, who led Mount Horeb to its first WIAA Division 2 boys soccer state championship, was named the Large Schools Coach of the Year by the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association.
Milwaukee Marquette's Steve Lawrence, whose team won its second consecutive Division 1 title and is among the top-ranked teams in the country, was chosen the Private/Parochial Coach of the Year.
The honoree for Small Schools – public schools with enrollments of less than 500 – was Scott Feltner, whose Kohler side finished 24-3-1 and advanced to the Division 3 sectional semifinals.
Mount Horeb finished 20-2-2 and was unbeaten in its final 20 games (18-0-2), blanking Sturgeon Bay 2-0 in the semifinals and Waukesha Catholic Memorial 1-0 in the state final. Newman has a 210-91-28 record in 14 seasons with the Vikings.
Marquette (24-0-1) beat top teams from California, Washington, D.C., Missouri, Indiana and Illinois during the fourth unbeaten season in program history and is unbeaten in its past 36 games (35-0-1). Lawrence has a sterling 120-19-9 record in six seasons at the helm of the Hilltoppers.
Feltner, the only coach in Kohler history, has led the Blue Bombers to a 116-34-6 record in their six seasons. This year, the school has an enrollment of 154 students.
The three coaches will be honored at the WSCA Coaches' Convention in March, and are eligible for National Soccer Coaches Association of America regional awards.
