Depending on results in New Jersey and Maryland, Milwaukee Marquette could be crowned the national champion in prep boys soccer on Sunday.
The Hilltoppers (24-0-1), who completed their season by winning the WIAA Division 1 state title last weekend, are ranked third in the ESPN RISE Fab 50. The two teams ranked ahead of them – No. 1 Newark St. Benedict's Prep (N.J.) and No. 2 Hyattsville DeMatha (Md.) – close out their seasons on Sunday.
If both teams lose, Marquette will be declared the fall national champion, ESPN RISE editor Sheldon Shealer wrote.
St. Benedict's (22-0-0) plays Pennington Prep looking for its 23rd consecutive New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association Prep A championship. DeMatha (19-0-0), meanwhile, puts its 43-game winning streak on the line against Gonzaga of Washington, D.C., in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference final. In the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll, St. Benedict's and DeMatha also are first and second, but Cherry Creek, Colo., is ranked third with Marquette fourth. The last Wisconsin team named national champion was Brookfield East, which went 29-0-0 in 1995. The Spartans most likely are the only state team to earn such a title, but complete records are not available.
