Prep BoysPatrick Hodan was among the state's top goal scorers this season, finding the back of the net 45 times.

But the Milwaukee Marquette senior forward was at his best in the biggest games.

Hodan finished his career with 14 goals in seven WIAA state tournament matches, including eight last weekend at Milwaukee's Uihlein Soccer Park as the Hilltoppers (24-0-1) won their eighth Division 1 title in the past 12 years.

While the WIAA doesn't keep records for career state tournament goals, it is highly unlikely anyone has surpassed Hodan's total. The Notre Dame recruit matched the state tournament record with a four-goal game in the quarterfinals last year and this year broke his own record for goals in a tournament.

Hodan scored in each of Marquette's final 12 matches, and also had 10 assists on the season – meaning he had a hand in 51 percent of the Hilltoppers' 107 goals.

  • It was the fourth unbeaten season for the storied Marquette program, following the Hilltoppers' teams in 1979 (16-0-6), 1984 (20-0-1) and 1989 (25-0-1). Marquette is the first unbeaten team to win the WIAA Division 1 state title since Brookfield East, which went 29-0-0 in 1995.
  • The Hilltoppers, who will enter the 2012 season with a 36-game unbeaten streak (35-0-1), moved up one spot to No. 3 in the ESPN RISE Fab 50 and to No. 4 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll this week. Marquette is assured of a top-10 final ranking by ESPN RISE, which notes that "the Hilltoppers played the nation's most demanding schedule and nearly pulled off a perfect season." Marquette's last loss was 3-1 to Brookfield East on Sept. 28, 2010.
  • This week's NSCAA Region VI poll features five Wisconsin sides: No. 1 Marquette, No. 9 Middleton (21-4-2), No. 11 Kettle Moraine (19-7-2), No. 14 Brookfield East (21-5-0) and No. 15 Neenah (20-4-2). There are three NSCAA polls left in the fall, with the last one scheduled to be released Nov. 22.
  • This was the 10th year boys soccer has included three divisions – of the 30 state titles won during that time, 22 have been claimed by private schools. On Saturday, Mount Horeb became the first public school to win a Division 2 championship since Slinger in 2005. Since the addition of the third division, Plymouth (2002), is the only other public school to win a Division 2 title. Columbus (2008) is the only public school to win a Division 3 championship.
  • Only Marquette has won more WIAA state titles than Racine Prairie School, which claimed its fourth Division 3 championship Saturday. The Hawks are tied with Whitefish Bay for second in WIAA history.
  • All 13 matches over the weekend finished in 80 minutes, marking the first time since 2000 – when there were two divisions and 10 games – that no state tournament games went to overtime.
  • The three state finals will be shown on tape delay on Fox Sports Wisconsin this month. The Division 3 championship will air at 7 p.m. Monday, while the Division 2 final can be seen at 7 p.m. Nov. 22 and the Division 1 match is scheduled for 7 p.m. Nov. 24. All the state matches other than the championship games are available for viewing on the WIAA's video site – those links are available here. The finals will be added to the site in the future.
