Prep BoysFor the third time in seven years, Madison Memorial and Middleton shared the Big Eight Conference prep boys soccer championship.

Senior Pat Surtees scored on a header in the 78th minute as the Spartans rallied past host Middleton 3-2 in a conference finale Tuesday night to finish tied with the Cardinals atop the standings at 8-1-0.

Fellow seniors Isaias Colegial and Lucas Cardona each had a goal and an assist as Memorial (13-4-1 overall), which lost three of its first four games, scored three second-half goals to extend its unbeaten streak to 10 games (8-0-2) and claim a share of its 10th Big Eight title.

Junior Steven Harris had both goals for Middleton (16-3-1), ranked second in the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association Division 1 state poll, putting the Cardinals ahead in the first half and again in the 68th minute. Middleton, which has won or shared nine Big Eight championships, hadn't lost to a state team in 14 matches (13-0-1) since a 1-0 loss to Wauwatosa East back on Aug. 17.

The teams also shared the title in 2005 and '07, the latter part of a three-way split along with Madison West. The Regents (17-2-0, 7-2-0), who also have won or shared 10 Big Eight titles, finished third this season. More on the match from the Wisconsin State Journal

Many other conferences around the state finished up Tuesday night, including:

  • NORTH SHORE: Max Loebl and T.J. Schmidt scored in a 12-minute span in the second half as Whitefish Bay (13-5-0) beat Glendale Nicolet 2-0 to wrap up the conference title. The Blue Dukes finished 6-1-0 in North Shore play, finishing ahead of Cedarburg (5-2-0) – which handed them their only conference loss. Germantown and Mequon Homestead went into Tuesday's match tied with Cedarburg for second place at 4-2-0; a score wasn't available for that match.
  • CLASSIC 8: Senior Mike Dugan had a goal and an assist and sophomore Nick Moon set up two goals as Waukesha West (18-1-3, 7-0-0), ranked fourth in Division 1, claimed the outright title with a 3-2 victory over Division 2 No. 4 Waukesha Catholic Memorial. Kettle Moraine (13-6-1, 6-1-0) was second, its lone loss coming to the Wolverines 2-1 back on Sept. 6.
  • FOX VALLEY ASSOCIATION: Adam Pohlman scored on a pair of free kicks and added two assists and Reed Cammarota also had two goals as Neenah (15-3-1), ranked fifth in Division 1, finished 9-0-0 in the FVA with a 5-1 win over Oshkosh West.
  • CAPITOL: Three teams went into the final night of Capitol Conference play tied for the lead, and all three won to share the title. Senior forward Matt Bulovsky had his fourth straight hat trick and eighth of the season – raising his season total to 32 goals – as Lodi (15-2-0) cruised past Poynette-Portage 6-1; junior Javier Lagos and freshman Roman Manning each had a goal and an assist as Cambridge-Deerfield (12-3-0) topped Columbus 3-1; and senior Otto Kienitz scored all four goals as Sugar River (8-10-0) held off fourth-place Watertown Luther Prep 4-3 to leave all three sides 7-1-0. The Blue Devils and Raiders also shared the title last season, while Cambridge-Deerfield's only other championship was a shared title back in 2001. It's the first three-way title share in the Capitol since 1995.
  • ROCK VALLEY: Senior Antonio Gonzalez had three goals and three assists as East Troy (20-2-0) closed in on its first Rock Valley title with a 7-1 win over Walworth Big Foot-Williams Bay. The Trojans are 9-0-0 in conference play heading into Thursday's finale against second-place Evansville (8-3-2, 6-1-0).
