Prep BoysWith practice getting under way next Monday and season openers set for Aug. 16, it's time to catch up on some prep boys soccer news.

As usual, there have been plenty of coaching changes across the state since the season ended last October.

Here are seven that have been brought to our attention; please This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it with other changes.

  • Appleton West: Craig Tetzlaff, who also is the Terrors' girls coach, takes over for John Wuebben, who stepped down after 20 years. Tetzlaff, who played for Wuebben at West, was an assistant in the boys program for six years and has been the girls coach for 11 seasons. Wuebben will continue to coach the Appleton North girls team, which won the WIAA Division 1 state championship in June.
  • Lodi: Jeff Nelson is the Blue Devils' new coach, replacing Vince Padilla, who resigned due to work obligations. The Blue Devils were 62-35-5 in five seasons under Padilla and won their first Capitol Conference title last fall.
  • Monona Grove: John Von Klopp returns to the Southern Badger Conference after two seasons at Watertown, succeeding Rich Plier with the Silver Eagles. Von Klopp, who had a 17-18-7 record with the Goslings, previously coached in the conference at Fort Atkinson (2007 and '08). Plier was 97-83-21 in nine years at MG and led the team to the WIAA Division 2 state semifinals in 2004.
  • Oregon: Kevin May was promoted to replace Scott Barth, whose family relocated to Texas. Barth had a 52-25-8 record in four seasons with the Panthers, the two-time defending Southern Badger champions.
  • Reedsburg: Rich King returns as the Beavers coach taking over for Sonny Hyde, who will continue to be the school's girls coach.
  • Waunakee: Kurt Kliminski will coach the Warriors, moving into the role when Nick Genova resigned to pursue a master's degree. Waunakee was 53-15-4 under Genova the past three seasons and won or shared the Northern Badger Conference title each year.
  • Wisconsin Rapids: Derek Bell takes the reins of the Red Raiders from Bill Fehrenbach, who stepped down after a stellar 19-year career. Fehrenbach led Rapids to a 300-119-53 record, six state tournament appearances and nine Wisconsin Valley Conference championships. Bell was an assistant in the UW-Stevens Point women's program before serving as the men's and women's coach at Cornell (Iowa) in 2010.

A quick look back

Milwaukee Marquette (22-4-1) won its seventh Division 1 state title in 11 years, holding off Appleton North 3-2 in the final.

Waukesha Catholic Memorial (24-3-3) claimed its first Division 2 championship by outlasting Appleton Fox Valley Lutheran 3-2 in double overtime.

Racine Prairie School (24-2-0) blanked La Crosse Aquinas 5-0 for its third Division 3 title, not allowing a goal in its six postseason matches.

Only three juniors were named to the first two teams of the senior-dominated Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association All-State team. Milwaukee Marquette midfielder Patrick Hodan, a Notre Dame recruit, made the first team, while Brookfield Central midfielder-forward Stuart McBain and Kenosha Bradford midfielder-forward Cesar Gutierrez were second-team picks.

A quick look ahead

The 2011 WIAA playoffs start Oct. 8 with regional quarterfinals in divisions 2 and 3, "play-in" games that are needed because there are more than 64 teams in those divisions.

Regional semifinals are Oct. 11 and regional finals are Oct. 13, with sectional semifinals Oct. 20 and finals Oct. 22. The 30th annual state tournament is Oct. 27 to 29 and is being held at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee for the ninth consecutive year.

There are a record 262 teams entered in the 2011 tournament, three more than last year and two more than the 260 that entered in 2009. The three new teams are all in Division 3: Arcadia, Milwaukee Saint Anthony and Milwaukee Salam School.
