The Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association changed the format of its all-state boys soccer team.
But under any setup, there was little doubt who the state's top player was this fall.
Milwaukee Marquette senior forward Patrick Hodan, who led the Hilltoppers to an unbeaten season and their second consecutive WIAA Division 1 state championship, headed up the new-look WSCA all-state teams as the Player of the Year.
Hodan scored 45 goals and added 10 assists for Marquette (24-0-1), scoring in each of the final 12 matches of the season. He broke his own record with eight goals in three state tournament games and likely scored more goals than anyone in WIAA state tournament history (14).
A Notre Dame recruit, Hodan was one of 14 players named to the Large Schools All-State team. In past years, the WSCA named an 11-player all-state first team and second team along with honorable mention; this year, the organization selected 14-player Large Schools (Division 1) and Small Schools (Divisions 2 and 3) teams with "Best of the Rest" selections from all divisions.
Hodan was the only player named to the first or second team last fall to make one of the top teams this season. Madison Memorial forward Lucas Cardona – a first-teamer in 2009 – Germantown midfielder Bradley Bane, Kettle Moraine midfielder Nick Biasiotta (7 goals, 14 assists) and Appleton North defender Adam Hermsen made the Large Schools squad after earning honorable mention in 2010. Middleton sophomore defender Jack Hagstrom (3 goals) was the only non-senior named to the either of the top teams.
Marquette had three players on the Large Schools team, as did Division 1 state runner-up Kettle Moraine: Biasiotta and the duo of goalkeeper Mac Wheeler (9 shutouts) and forward Trey Dowling (31-7), who both have committed to Marquette University along with Hermsen.
Waukesha Catholic Memorial senior forward Aaron Horvat (22-4), a UW-Milwaukee recruit who was an honorable mention selection last year, was named to the Small Schools team. All 14 players on the squad were seniors, including forward Patrick Ruhland (34-17), midfielder Nick Gasser (11-13) and defender Cooper Patton of Division 2 state champion Mount Horeb and goalkeeper Logan Ketterer (14 shutouts) of repeat Division 3 state champion Racine Prairie School.
As the WSCA Player of the Year, Hodan will be named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-American team and the NSCAA All-Region VI team. Two teammates, Marquette forward Joe Naughton (9-7) and midfielder Logan Andryk (6-9), also will be on the regional team along with Wheeler, Biasiotta and Brookfield Central senior defender Nate Rohde (3-1).
