 Madison Memorial's Lucas Cardona closed out his prep soccer career with a hat trick of Madison All-City awards.
The senior forward was the lone repeat selection on the 15-member team, which was selected by coaches of the five city sides and honored at the 31st annual All-City Banquet on Wednesday night at Madison Edgewood High School. The Downtown Optimist Club has sponsored the event since its inception.
For the second straight year, the team was dominated by seniors. Last fall, Cardona was the only non-senior to make the team; this season's team included three juniors: Madison Edgewood's Michael McKernan, Madison La Follette's Ryan Shogren and Madison West's David Villa, all midfielders.
Each team also had a Scholar-Athlete Award winner, sponsored by UW Health Sports Medicine, with Madison East senior midfielder Sergio Becerra the only player to earn that honor and earn a spot on the All-City team.
West, Memorial and La Follette each had four players on the team, while East had two and Edgewood one. The City Championship was shared by West and Memorial, which each went 3-1-0 in the city series – the Regents beat Memorial 3-2, but La Follette knocked off West 3-1. The Lancers and Purgolders each finished 2-2-0 and Edgewood was 0-4-0 against city competition.
Memorial claimed the Break Away Sports Center Sportsmanship Award winner for the second straight year after a season in which the Spartans weren't issued any yellow cards for dissent.
Dr. Alison Brooks of UW Health Sports Medicine, who is the team physician for the University of Wisconsin men's soccer and women's hockey teams, was the guest speaker at the banquet. She played at NCAA powerhouse North Carolina from 1992 to '94, winning three national championships alongside players such as Mia Hamm and Kristine Lilly and winning all but two matches in her college career.
