 One of the two unanimous selections on the All-Big Eight Conference boys soccer team ended his career this fall, while the other was just starting his.
Madison Memorial senior forward Lucas Cardona and Middleton sophomore defender Jack Hagstrom, whose teams shared the conference title, were the unanimous picks in voting done by Big Eight coaches.
Cardona made the first team for the third consecutive year – he earned all-conference honors all four seasons, having been honorable mention as a freshman in 2008. He was one of eight seniors on the 11-member top squad, which also featured two juniors and a sophomore (Hagstrom).
Middleton led the way with four players on the first team: Hagstrom; senior goalkeeper Max Zimmerman, who moved up after being a second-team choice last fall; junior forward Derek Ott, who was honorable mention in 2010; and senior midfielder Andrew Frank.
Madison West senior defender Will Pretto also landed on the top team after earning honorable mention last season. Senior midfielder Robbie Phillips and junior forward David Villa also were first-team selections for the Regents, who matched Memorial with three representatives. The Spartans' other first-teamers were senior defender Peter Grimmer and senior midfielder Isaias Colegial. Madison La Follette senior defender Sam Foy rounded out the team.
